Have a colleague who introduced me to the 3 location rule.

"If the food establishment has more than 3 locations the quality will not be consistent and do not eat there"

What ya think?

Ruth's Chris is not to be eaten due to that rule? Damn.

I travel a lot- and all chains tend to have quality issues, some are good in some places, some are never good, some are good sometimes but not all the time- Have not found a chain that is the exception yet

I think the rule is simple and effective- not a guarantee- but it beats the chains the odds of a bad meal at a chain

SO if you know a chain you do not think fits this rule let me know

I have eaten at a lot of Ruth Chris's most are good but I have eaten at some that know how to ruin an expensive steak.

I no longer take clients to Ruth Chris except for a few cities

I tend to agree, not so much with the consistency of product as with the institutionalization (WOW, I just used a 20-letter word!) of the product, i.e., Olive Garden syndrome. A notable exception in BR for me is Flemings. I think they put out quality food.

What didn't your colleague like about his Emeril experience? I've been to three of his restaurants, and never had a bad meal.

not sure Emeril's would qualify as each of his facilities have a different menu, different theme etc- they just share a common owner
Would you classify his restaurants as a chain?

Didn't know we were talking about literal chains. Personally, I gravitate away from chains for obvious reasons, but there are exceptions, one being Bonefish as an example. I've never had less than good food there.

one of the reasons for the thread was to discover exceptions -

I think it's a silly rule, especially if it's a hard and fast one. Find out what's good and what's bad and either eat there or not.

not a silly rule but it is a decent guideline- most chain rests. have ongoing quality issues,

Ask Louie DeAngelo why he bought some of his franchises back

Just my experience, but J. Alexanders quality is pretty consistent. No place is perfect. I've had quality issues at local places, too.

So where do you bring them instead? Which cities?
