I always find it interesting what each family makes for Thanksgiving that maybe we didn't have growing up.

Things we've never had in my family, but a lot of people have:

Mashed potatoes
Green peas (creamed peas?)
Mac and cheese
Shrimp Mirliton (I'm not from New Orleans)
Oyster dressing
Broccoli and cheese

Things I grew up having at Thanksgiving that does not currently exist at the one I attend, unless we bring it:

Cornbread dressing
Rice dressing/dirty rice
Green bean casserole
Sweet potatoes (although we do have carrot soufle which is so similar)
Pumpkin pie

I live in New Mexico and mashed potatoes are a huge deal here.

It makes zero sense to me.

I mean, you can get that any day at KFC.

Turkey.

It's very, very rare we cook a bird for Thanksgiving...pretty much only when we know we're having people over who will eat it. Of course, my wife did make me snag a couple of turkey legs for this year....just going to toss them on the smoker and call it good.

Mashed potatoes are amazing, and go great with gravy.

Well you can pretty much get turkey and the rest of the standards most anywhere as well.

However, now that I am aware mashed potatoes are standard fare in New Mexico it just occurred to me with your post that perhaps they could be elevated a bit with some hatch chili’s mixed in?

I have canned hatch chili’s, which I’m aware aren’t as good as fresh but it is November, so I’m going to take a few portions and add some to try. Maybe add some Mexican cheese.

If they are successful in enjoyment I’m going to call them Green Chili Tiger Potatoes in your honor.

If they blow then we’ll just keep it between us.

Better yet, whip up a batch of this and ladle it over mashed potatoes.......

You can also eat it as a stand alone dish like red chili or put it on eggs or ladle over burritos, pork chops, chicken, and steak.

If you have access to any smoked or roasted green chiles(smoked are better), dice them up and add them to your gravy.

It's amazing.

Green chile mac and cheese is also incredible.

My mother in law makes what they all call “hashbrown casserole”. The first thanksgiving I went over there When my wife told me that was on the menu, I was thinking like a breakfast casserole with eggs sausages etc.

This was crumbled up frozen hashbrown patties (like the McDonald’s kind), mixed with cream, onions, and Cajun seasoning and baked until browned. I may have eaten half the pan. So simple and so good.

I’m from south LA with a CenLA mother. We do not have mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, and for many years, we did not do turkey (usually had a nice roasted pork or ham). After a few more in laws were added to the mix, we now have turkey to please the “mainstream” tastes. We waver on the sweet potatoes, doing them some years and not others. Cornbread dressing is preferred over rice dressing, though we alternate.

We always start with gumbo of some kind.

Mashed potatoes. We've always used the turkey gravy over white rice.

Oyster dressing. I think I would absolutely love this!

Most of the stuff in my first list. Plus some other things that overlap the two.

I've never had it and think I would love it too.

Yeah, Jones' family might do rice (can't remember) but I know for sure they do plain egg noodles for the gravy which was so strange to me the first time I saw it My contributions vary, but I always supply the cornbread dressing because that is my #1 Thanksgiving food.

I had never heard of shrimp mirliton before meeting them, and boy do I love it now.

We've never done oyster dressing. I've always wanted to. Might make it around Christmas time for my wife and kids.

We also never do mac and cheese. First time I heard that people have it on Thanksgiving, I thought it was kinda weird.

Our traditional menu:

Turkey with gravy
Sweet potato casserole (with marshmallows)
Cornbread dressing
Green bean casserole
Rolls
Cranberry sauce (homemade)
Green salad (ever since my in-laws got involved)
Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie

I like the menu, but my parents and my in-laws (whom we combine at Thanksgiving) are sticklers for what they make. My wife and I usually get to make an appetizer and bring the rolls.

Your menu is exactly ours growing up.

Sometimes rice dressing in addition to the cornbread.

Yeah I don’t get the whole mashed potatoes thing. I eat that at least a couple times a month when the kids request it.

My Thanksgiving consists of

Turkey
Ham
Cornbread dressing
Rice dressing
Green bean casserole
Rolls

Pecan pie, candied yams, and apple pie for dessert.
