then just list the other places 11-50 in order by location without ranking them.
I still can't wrap my head around San Antonio having such shitty BBQ places. It's the 6th largest city in the country and the BBQ options are fricking terrible.

Recently visited the Hill country and partook in a few of these establishments. Blacks in Lockhart was best for me.

Were you able to purchase just this issue of Texas Monthly or are you a subscriber?

I love the usual white bread, onions and pickles. I'd rather tortillas though.

I subscribe through the BBQ Club. I’m sure this will be a hot issue. Apparently I got mine delivered here before they are available in Texas cause I’ve had people messaging asking for pics and where I got it from lol.

I'll be on the lookout for whether they offer it as a one-time purchase.

Many of these are diversity choices. Highlighting non-whites “changing the game”. Of the 50, I’ve been to around half.
Interstellar is a few blocks from my old home (now my rental property). It’s pretty decent, but not top 10.
Distant Relatives was actually bad. I’ve been twice and am nonplussed on the choice.
If you look at the criteria this year, it’s quite different. It’s not just about the bbq this time, but the establishment itself, and what sort of statement it makes

Awful take!
Gumbo is gumbo, right? Tex mex is Tex Mex? A steak is a steak! No variation in quality from cook to cook. Is that the implication?

Haven't looked all through the list but I suspect peripheral offerings ate distorting the ratings from the traditional BBQ staples.

It was last year. Looks like Philadelphia moved ahead of San Antonio this year by a nose:
1. New York City, NY (Population: 8,622,357)
2. Los Angeles, CA (Population: 4,085,014)
3. Chicago, IL (Population: 2,670,406)
4. Houston, TX (Population: 2,378,146)
5. Phoenix, AZ (Population: 1,743,469)
6. Philadelphia, PA (Population: 1,590,402)
7. San Antonio, TX (Population: 1,579,504)
8. San Diego, CA (Population: 1,469,490)
9. Dallas, TX (Population: 1,400,337)
10. San Jose, CA (Population: 1,036,242)

How the hell is Blacks in Austin not on there?
Posted on 10/18/21 at 6:09 pm to Chucktown_Badger
I was wondering the same thing, but I’m far from a Texas BBQ expert.
But Terry Blacks is amazing.

Is the Black's in Austin the same as the one in New Braunfels?

I don't think so. Same family from Lockhart but there was feud of some sort. The fantastic place in Austin is Terry Blacks.
And it's a travesty that it's not on the list. Should've been top-10.
Posted on 10/18/21 at 7:36 pm to AlwysATgr
There’s three different Blacks in Austin. 2 are offshoots from cousins. One is the family’s actual outpost.
Posted on 10/18/21 at 7:37 pm to AlwysATgr
I haven’t gotten to Terry Black’s myself, but from my conversations their sides have been talked about as tasting like they were poured out of a can. They were competing against craft joints that may only be open 2 days a week versus their 24 hour operation. The amount and quality they crank out is nothing short of an amazing feat, but I’m guessing sometimes quantity makes the quality suffer.
