Put this as a reply in the Houston BBQ thread but figured it deserved its own thread since it covers the whole state of Texas.

the new Texas Monthly BBQ List, 2021 Edition

They rank the Top 10, then just list the other places 11-50 in order by location without ranking them.

#10 Panther City - Fort Worth
#9 Snows - Lexington
#8 Evie Mae's - Wolfforth
#7 Franklin - Austin
#6 Cattleack - Dallas
#5 Leroy and Lewis - Austin
#4 Burnt Bean Co. - Seguin
#3 Truth - Houston
#2 Interstellar - Austin
#1 Goldee's - Fort Worth

How many have you eaten at? Watched a video on Meat Church's YT channel recently where Johnny White from Goldee's was on as a guest. Want to check them out.

Anyone been to Interstellar? I stayed a mile from there a month ago and didn't know it existed.

I’ve been to 6 of the top 10 and can say that for the most part I agree with this list, especially with Goldees being number 1. Jonny White and the fellas have built an unbelievably good restaurant.

I've been numerous time, live very close to it, and I'm pretty shocked it's that high.

Sorry but I’m going to have to personally sample all of these before I will believe the list is accurate.

It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

Truth is good, I've never been wowed...I'd rather Pinkerton's if I'm honest.

One thing I never understood about Texas bbq - whenever you order a platter, they give you a few slices of white bread and raw, white onions. Why? It's unappetizing and no one eats it. The pickles? Sure, I go to town on them, but the onions and bread typically just sit there.

It's just white bread and raw, uncooked white onions...

I get it for Nashville hot chicken. The bread soaks up that chicken grease and seasoning. For Texas bbq though...

I think the side dish game at Truth is better than just about every place in Houston, dessert game is for sure, but the actual BBQ itself isn't wait in a line that spills out into the parking lot on Waugh good.

You've never taken a piece of white bread and put a slice of brisket in it or wrapped a link of sausage up in it?

If someone put a tortilla and some salsa on your platter you'd probably lose your mind.

Nope. I eat the brisket separately. If I wanted a sandwich, I would order a chopped brisket or pulled pork BBQ sandwich.

Damn, i'm only at 12/50. This is a substantially different list than last time, probably because it wasn't just Daniel Vaughn's input...which is bullshite, there is no one more dedicated and knowledgeable about Texas bbq than him. A lot of new places are reflected at the expense of some older joints (i.e. no Lockhart places).

Did someone hold you down an force you to eat it? I don't but it never interferes with my meal. I just don't eat the bread or the onions no big deal.

I agree with others about Truth, it didn’t make a memorable impact on me. Panther City wowed me, Evie Mae’s was worth the drive from Baton Rouge to Lubbock, and I’m glad I just squeezed in Burnt Bean before this list. My Franklin’s experience I don’t fully count because it was pick up.

But, I’m always posting here about Goldee’s and I’m glad to see the crew get #1. Texted them all this morning. Best turkey I’ve ever had, best ribs, and their sides are awesome as well. So much work goes into every little thing. Had just talked to them about going back again in December to help out if they were short handed, got a feeling that will be the case.
