Guadalajara is very good.
Can’t go wrong with Papasitos either.
Another good choice is Lupe Tortilla

Candente is dominating the game recently on price and quality when compared to El T or Ninfa's, the OG's
Candente has just as good tortillas and is about 20% cheaper. You also get the TX BBQ flare with it being owned by the Pit Room folks - brisket queso, nachos, fajitas, tacos, etc. FTW

quote:I didn't want to mention it, as I felt it would get shite on, but we go there simply because the tortillas are superior to any I have had anywhere. I can get good skirt/chicken/burritos/tacos etc. lots of places, but have never had flour tortillas as good as theirs.

Ninfa's and El Tiempo on Navigation are great, but be prepared for them to be very crowded and a long wait on game day.
Candente is fantastic and only a 15 minute Uber to Minute Maid.

Gloria's is better than most everything I've seen above this post.

it's still pretty darn good for tex mex, and the atmospheres are lively and fun. i'm not sending an out of towner wanting to get houston tex mex to a hole in the wall joint that'll be dead to save $10. there's a reason el tiempo, orig ninfa's, and cadente are on nearly every local's list. they're certainly better than the other chain names that are getting thrown around.

If you think $25 for 2 pedestrian enchiladas is good, then go for it.
It’s like $17 for guac?
Overpriced. Not that great.

We had a late lunch at El Tiempo, it was delicious! Thanks for the tips, everyone

You’re completely out of your God damned mind if you think Gloria’s is better than “most everything” suggested here.

We are here in Houston for a few days. We’ve always gone to el Tiempo or Ninfas on our other visits here but decided to try Candente’s tonight. It was good but I still prefer El Tiempo the best.

El Tiempo on Richmond Ave.
This used to be my go to when visiting our Upper Kirby office. Now the margs taste like soap and the quality has dropped off post Covid.

Yep. El Tiempo’s quality widely varies now. Having 15 locations or whatever they’re up to is likely the cause.
I live down the street from Candente and am there probably 2x a month. Easily the best tex-mex in Houston.

Overpriced. Not that great.

I don’t think it’s all that contrarian
El tiempo is very expensive for a Tex Mex joint. Dropping steak house tabs there is easy. Old school carnitas are still bomb. I just go when someone else is buying these days
For the money, I rather go to any of the Hugo spots.
Speaking of which Urbe, while more Mex-mex, deserves mention on here

it's def not cheap, but it's an appreciable step up from lupe, escalante's, superica, guadalajara, etc
hugo's places shite on everything that's been mentioned in here, particularly xochi. that's a different experience than the original ask though.
eta: and we're ordering different things at el tiempo if you're running up decent steakhouse bills on food alone. beef fajitas for 2 is $30 each. apps, 2 margs, + fajitas will cost you a bunch, but that goes for pretty much every place mentioned in here. tex mex has gone up more than most cuisines in houston in the last 5 years if you want beef fajitas. teo happy hour + beef fajitas is easily the best tex mex deal around. i've shite on el tiempo more than once on here in recent months as it relates to value, but it's still towards the top of where i'd send guests wanting tex mex.

Went to El Tiempo Katy tonight for fajitas and old school carnitas and 8 margaritas. Great evening!
