You are going to shitty places if that is the case.

Spare me the bullshite. I've been to plenty of great sushi places.

At nicer sushi bars the chef will also paint the soy on and there will be no soy on the bar for you to supplement.

Yeah, you're talking about really high end places then. You aren't going to find many places like that in the entire state of Louisiana.

Damn straight!

Those aren't all the ones I order, I just took one of the first pictures off Yelp because I'm at work.

Word to the wise. Never, ever ever ever do this in the FBD thread. They frown upon that. Much frowning.

That should feed 2-3 people easily

I read that an Uchi has opened in Dallas. I'd like to check it out sometime.

The crazy thing is, I have 2 friends who eat much more than me. When McDonalds had McChicken & Filet o' Fish on sale for 2 for $2, one ate six of EACH. Not sure if you're familiar with Moe's Pizza on the Westbank, but he ate an entire one of their largest pizzas by himself.

He was featured in the Wall Street Journal several years ago for his boiled crawfish-eating prowess. Now he's a very successful chiropractor in the Dallas area and drives a Lambo.

There is a place in ATL

Atlanta is typically where I get my sushi fix since New Orleans is terrible for it. I was excited to go to Hayakawa last time I was in town, but sadly it was closed for renovations.

I tried a couple of new places instead. Sushi Huku was the first and was very good. The chutoro chirashi there was outstanding. The chefs were all business though. Surprisingly Sakura over in Cobb was excellent too. Some of the best sake toro I have been served. The chef chatted with me a good bit and then let me sample some new nigiri concepts he had been working on.

i dont get the 'trendy' thing either.

i like sushi, thai, chinese, indian, mediterranean, mexican, etc etc.

i don't look at any of those as 'trendy' rather i crave different ones at different times.

i love sushi (when done well) because everything tastes so fresh and its nice to get away from all the fried foods.

If you have been to plenty of great places where the rice and fish were bland, then I question their greatness. A skilled chef will have flavorful rice that sticks, but is firm and shiny, not gummy or dry.

Traditional sushi in Louisiana is really poor. That is probably why you associate sushi with being bland. Mediocre chefs don't care about their rice. They just throw some stuff in an electric cooker and leave it open all night for service.

None of this matters. The people talking about ordering $50 worth of sushi and leaving hungry live in Louisiana.

Where else can you get tasty food and art on the same plate?

I used to think sushi wasn't really all of that until I went to Uchi in Austin.

I don't go to Uchi for sushi. Their specialty is there small plates, which are amazing. Their sushi is pretty average IMHO. BR has far better places if you want good sushi, as does Austin.

Check the menu at Kanno then tell me how difficult it is to hit $50.

If I'm sitting down I'm gonna have a drink, so that's $5 right there. Typically gonna order edamame just because I like it. That's another $5. Sashimi comes in around $12-$15. Before you know it you're there.

Uchi blew me away. I did 14 course blind tasting that the server put together, so there were a few pieces of sushi, but it was mostly small plates. Still.. I think of it in my mind as "sushi restaurant" even if I ate very little sushi.

So good.

My wife always craves this dish, Tuna Sunset.

I just order a la carte sushi and sashimi. I always get Tomago, I guess that's the one thing I crave.

I can't remember everything I had. I know there was a few piece of sushi... some fish eggs.. and this was dessert (foie gras nigiri)

Oak Grilled Escolar

Their spin on ceviche

Pork belly "tataki"

Machi Cure, which was like their version of "nachos".. nothing like nachos.

I don't remember the rest.

EDIT. Oh yeah.. we did shots of quail eggs with shots of fish eggs at the same time.
