I ran out of royal oak lump recently and found some kingsford match light charcoal. Couldn’t believe how strong the smell of lighter fluid was. I could see using a single briquette or 2 as a starter for lump if you didn’t have a looflighter but that’s probably it for me

That’s because it’s vile acrid crap used out of necessity when Cookie was cooking for the wagon train in the middle of nowhere and all he had to cook over was chaparral, buffalo shite or mesquite. It’s awful for smoking
Truer words have never been spoken. I hate Mesquite grilled.

Dryer lint plus some petroleum jelly or melted paraffin wax is also another great starter. Ball it up into golf ball sized clumps of lint, and either soak in the melted wax or roll a dab of the jelly into it, and then roll it a bit smaller. They light up quickly, burn for several minutes, and gives you a high enough flame at the bottom of a chimney to get the coals going.

Electric is the right answer.

Those cheap electric starters are fast and last for years.

Example of electic charcoal starter found in every walmart too

I have some wood from a large jalapeno plant which died from cold weather. Thinking of cutting it up into small chunks, soaking in water and using with my next long smoke of ribs. Anyone think this is a bad idea?

Maybe not for the ribs, but I don't know if that's safe to be around. I could see it being pretty rough on a person, if there's any capzasin held in the wood.

Using that wood a bad idea? I don't think it is. Give it a shot and see what kinda flavor it imparts. Soaking in water? Definitely a bad idea. You're using wood to impart smoke into the meat. For that wood to smoke, it needs to burn. For it to burn, it needs to be dry.

Amazingribs.com scienced the shite out of it and proved it to be a myth

Am I odd for only using the term "BBQ/barbecue" as a noun to describe smoked meat?

I've always thought direct heat like steaks and burgers is grilling and low and slow is BBQ .

There are areas of the South where BBQ only describes the meat, not the process. The BBQ song on youtube explains it.

Right. I call the act "grilling" or "smoking".
