Super late to this party but regular charcoal & hickory wood make for a great BBQ!

I feel so stupid for using matchlight all these years. Everyone always told me they could taste the lighter fluid and I never thought I did until I tried BBQing with regular charcoal. Then I added hickory wood chunks to it and holy shite my small stuck in my ways world was blown!!! I feel like BBQing for every meal now. Did some steaks last weekend like that and burgers today. Best steak I’ve ever BBQ’d in my life and the burgers were damn good, too.
What bits of BBQ knowledge that everyone knows except me am I missing out on? Because apparently I’m special.

Try some oak and pecan.
Better than hickory, IMO

Get you a charcoal chimney starter and leave the fluid out all together. Takes two full sheets of newspaper to light. That's all.

Yea I got one of those and use it now.

Electric starter eliminates the newspaper that is recycled paper full of chemicals that then get inked up.
Any hardwood is good for smoking. Fruit/nut tree limbs downed by storms or annual maintenance/trimming all impart flavors. Just be sure to dry them thoroughly as green wood can leave an acrid taste. Some folks even enjoy evergreens although I generally find those acrid too (surely you've heard of cedar planked salmon/trout)

Do people still get Newspapers? Just use paper towels coated in a little oil.

What pit/grill are you using?

Pecan, hickory and oak are my favorite woods. I don’t care for mesquite.

ALOT if you just realized Matchlight is shite.

That’s because it’s vile acrid crap used out of necessity when Cookie was cooking for the wagon train in the middle of nowhere and all he had to cook over was chaparral, buffalo shite or mesquite. It’s awful for smoking

Kingsford Professional is on sale at Costco - two 18 lb bags for $14.99.

It’s an acquired taste.

Whenever I'm at the store and I see someone with Matchlight, I feel like I need to say something. I never do, though...

Am I odd for only using the term "BBQ/barbecue" as a noun to describe smoked meat?

Ditch briquettes altogether and use lump.
You’re welcome.

Depends on what you're doing. If you want a slow, steady, consistent burn for a long smoke and are doing something like the snake method, briquettes are your friend. If you're letting it rip and grilling steaks, chicken or chops, then lump.

This is a good deal. I also like B&B from Academy.
