I have some co-workers in town for business and they are insisting on going to Mandinas.
What is some pretty sure bets on the menu? Apparently these folks are used to steak and are eating at nice places while here and wanted one meal to be an old school neighborhood Italian/New Orleans kind of place and they picked Mandinas.

Mandinas is good. Venezia and Vincent's would also scratch that itch.

My suggestion is to duck when the gunshots start.

I get downvoted to hell whenever I say it, but I do not like Mandina's at all. Not for me.

That being said, fried chicken isn't bad

Nothing they do is exotic enough to mess up

Fried seafood is fine. Veal or eggplant parm

If they have soft shell crabs, GET IT. They only offer them when they are really nice and they do a great job of perfectly frying them. You can get em doused in the amandine. I think it's a bit overkill, but it's still delicious if you want something over the top like that.

I agree. If the folks enjoy fried oysters, they do a fine job on those as well. The poboy is good also.

Contrary to the above post, I get the crab claws almost every time I go there. I love them and I've come close to the dish at home. They're best when the claws are bigger. The wine sauce is good.

I get them basically everywhere they're offered

Mandina's were trash

ETA: I am retarded, disregard. Confused Mandina's crab claws with another place's

I live in Mid-City and there's a lot of good places to eat within blocks of each other.

Katies
Venezia
Mandina's
Liuzza's

They are all solid places.

If you decide on Venezia, consider the Eggplant Vatican which is a hollowed out half eggplant stuffed with shrimp and crawfixh baked with a rich cream sauce and served with a side of Alfredo.

My wife usually gets the Veal Supreme and we share a Fried Calamari appetizer. A glass of wine for her, a cocktail for me and we're set.

They're a little different from other places, but I can't count the number of times I've had them. My Mom loves them also. They're an app so there's little risk to trying them. Maybe share them with the table.

After I eat the claws, I use one to scoop up excess sauce.

small, bland batter, overcooked

I'm used to lafayette and abbeville crab claws. the shittiest ones I've had out west still blew away the ones I had at Mandina's

Stick to the oysters

ETA: NVM I'm a retard

You obviously had a bad time with these fellas but maybe it was a one off? a bad batch?

Possibly, but that batter just straight up sucked. I'd try them again if someone else ordered but I wouldn't get them myself.

Let me reiterate - everything else I had was fine. It was just the crab claws that sucked
