That's strange. They don't have a batter at all. They are cooked, nekkid, in a seasoned butter and wine sauce with a seasoned breadcrumb topping.

Yeah I was planning on getting marinated claws.

Friend,
We have not been to Mandina’s in a decade. It was never really in our rota of Italian restaurants, so I will never pretend to be an expert of Mandina’s cuisine, while I do consider myself among the ten most knowledgeable people on Earth on the topic of Creole Italian cuisine.
Mandina’s poorboys were good. Shrimp was their best. Their shrimp remoulade is very good. The breaded veal cutlet was good, maybe even better than Rocky & Carlo’s. The Gulf fish meuniere was always my favorite entree.
There are no less than ten better Creole Italian restaurants in the area in comparison to Mandina’s, and you know my favorite, whose name need not be mentioned. Its atmosphere, food, and value are significantly better. The Rickey Jackson crab fingers are the best crab fingers dish in America. And its soft shell Marcello dish is arguably the best dish in the entire Metro area.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

I actually don't love them. I do think they are a bit bland and usually not meaty enough to justify the bother or cost.
Although, my family loves them, so we tend to order them. I certainly don't find them as noteworthily or viscerally bad as Carson.

You are right. I am retarded.
Disregard everything I said - confused it with Casamento's crab claws. Ate at both on back to back days on a bachelor trip a couple of years ago and switched them in my head

I like Mandina’s. It is the quintessential New Orleans neighborhood restaurant. The reason I don’t go there more often is because there is another restaurant a few blocks away that I like better- Katie’s.

I agree on the Casamento's claws. They are nothing to write home about.

If they have it get the soft shell crab meuniere, over french fries. If not, the Gulf fish meuniere. I don't think anyone does it better.

Well they were out of soft shells and crab claws.
Pretty good meal of onion rings, a few poboys, fish almondine, and veal parmesean.
It was a good place to bring some guys from Kentucky for something different away from the French Quarter, but I don't see any reason I will be going back anytime soon.
Thanks for all of the feedback on this post.

I have been eating at Mandina's since the early 60's, it has always been my 'go to' place in N.O.. My last three lunches there were very disappointing, WTF happened. For the time being I'm going to go to Katie's or Liuzza's, both are wonderful, Liuzza's holds so many great memories of frozen fish bowls of beer and poboys, roast beef and oyster.
I'll be back to Mandina's, when my son comes to BR we usually make a trip, the food is to die for.
