Substitute For Redfish on the Halfshell?
Posted by auwaterfowler on 9/20/22 at 7:13 pm02
I’m in N AL, so going out and catching or buying redfish isn’t an option, especially redfish filets with the scales still on. Could I use bass or something else and get a similar result??

I mean, it’s just grilled fish, huh?
What exactly are you talking about when you say redfish on the half shell?
You can grill any fish that I know of.

not the same, its a much softer fish that will be hard to keep from falling apart but if you are careful you can do it.
you want a firmer flesh fish to do that
cant you get black drum there? it is the same as redfish

Bass would work, if you can find some Gaspergoo (fresh water drum), and snapper work. Sheephead curl up pretty bad if you try to grill them scales on.

We do Bass on the half shell...so much easier to clean and get more meat on the filets. Cook low heat and slower than you normally grill. Season well. Lemon at the end. Will be your new favorite way to eat Bass if similar experience to us

If you could find striped bass, it’s almost identical

I've done it with bigger bass before and it's great

Would a red snapper with the skin left on one side work?

The idea behind the half shell is the scales help to protect the flesh from the flames or high heat of grilling. If going with fish that have no scales just watch your heat.

Yep. Works with any and all snapper.

Bass work fine. I have only done it a couple times because we usually catch small bass in the marsh and we usually have plenty of Redfish. I think I will take some out the freezer, I have some on the half shell from the summer.
Sheepshead was mentioned, I know it doesn't hold it's shape but it is damn good eating on the half shell. I save those for me and the wife, the pretty redfish usually are for guests and giving away.
Black drum is not redfish... a puppy black drum will cook similar but it is not the same.

Correct. A redfish is a red drum. Poster above mentioned a freshwater drum, a very underrated fish in my book. Good on the grill and in a courtboullion.

I catch striped bass in lake Lanier and usually cook them just like redfish. Very similar in flavor and texture! Probably hard for the OP to buy at a store though.
