Stand Mixer thoughts and opinions

Considering getting one for the house so we can do some more baking. I know KitchenAid makes a few $300+ stand mixers that also tilt. Price seems high and not sure what other mixers are out there that function just as well for a cheaper price.
What does the Food Board have to say about these machines?

It's built like a tank and will last forever. Your kids and grandkids may even be able to use it in the future.

I have used the same Bowl lift model Kitchen Aid for 15 years, paid a couple hundred extra over a base model but has worked like a champ since day one. Sister in law has gone through 2 of the cheaper Kitchen Aids from Wally World in that time.

Kitchen aid has two different models. The cheap one is the tilt one and uses plastic gears. It will break much sooner than the other model, which is the pro model which has the bowl lift. The gears are metal and will last forever on the pro model. Pro model may have a stronger motor as well, but I’m not sure about that.

Get an extra bowl. It's nice to just swap bowls for icing or whatever instead of having to wash/dry the only bowl.

When did they start putting plastic gears in the tilt model?
I have one that is at least 18 years old, and I'm pretty sure it's all metal.

My first mixer was a used tilt-head. It had some issues and struggled mixing thick dough, which was kind of a dealbreaker. I bought a pro with the bowl lift, but it was actually too damn tall to fit under my cabinets, tucked away in the corner. That was annoying but I found a work-around.
I prefer the ease of use of the tilt-head, but the bowl-lift is only slightly less convenient and I've had zero issues with it for 5 years now. Plus, it seems to be able to handle thick doughs with ease.

It's a seldomly used item in our kitchen, but it's also one of those things that you're really happy to have when you do need it.

I have the tilt head, dough can be a problem but I’m more than pleased with mine

I have a bowl lift I bought 12 years ago. It is a workhorse. I will buy another if mine ever wears out.

Use our bowl lift pro all the time. Use the attachments you can get as well.

dude, the KA is a lifetime investment. Mine is going on 25 yrs strong and we use it 3-4 times per week. When my wife's grandmother passed away, we got her KA mixer that was from the 1950's. It still worked like a champ.
Buy a $150 Chinese knock-off brand and you'll be buying another mixer in < 5 years.

I got a Hobart N50 at a garage sale for $30. Hobart originally developed Kitchenaid brand stand mixers. The brand was sold to someone else.
This machine is a 5 quart bowl-lift model selling for about $1500 new. I just saw one listed for sale at over $4400. It is a beast. I know that one construction company used this model for mixing test batches of concrete! It has a 3-speed transmission, so you can't smoothly switch speed, you have to stop and manually shift gears. This is only a minor annoiance for me.
I bought the machine to make dough for pizza and bread almost exclusively. I was told the previous owner used it similarly. It has never bogged down even while filling the bowl with a double batch of hi-gluten pizza dough.
Unfortunately, it does not fit Kitchenaid attachments.

Ours came in handy making egg nogg. You know it’s solid, it’s heavy as hell.

I've had a bowl-lift Kitchen Aid mixer since 1988. Big, heavy, powerful. That said, small electric motors and motor controllers are undergoing constant improvement, and not all KA mixers have the same motor. There's an interesting thread on this at...

One way to get a better price is to watch for closeouts of discontinued or undesired colors. Basic gray or white will not be as heavily discounted.

Hop on ebay and get an old kitchenaid that was made by hobart. Other good vintage mixers are the bosch universal and chemex mixer, I like these better for a lot of things.

Even the cheap one lasts a long time. Mine is going on 15 years now with no problems.

We have three KitchenAid mixers and one Bosch. The Bosch and two of the KitchenAids stay out on the counter at all times.

I have a spare Kitchen Aid mixer left from my father's estate. I am open to selling it if you are interested in a used one.
