My wife has been hinting about getting one of these.

It looks like the "Yukon" is about 400 bucks. A good surround table is another 400 smacks.

How good are they? We live in south Florida, so we don't need a firepit to keep us warm - it would mainly be just to sit around an occasionally do S'mores. I would be happy with a gas fireplace but for I love making fire and I'm intrigued at the possibility of cooking on it.

So I have some questions:

Does it generate a lot of smoke or heat?

If we keep it on our uncovered patio, will it stain or discolor the patio bricks?

How is it to cook on? I'm seeing cooking as a definite way to stain the bricks, but is there a way to mitigate that (thinking of maybe getting a griddle option).

I have one. They are pretty neat. Keep the wood at or below the top of the barrel and they barely put out any smoke, once you get it going. There is some initial smoke though, until it gets hot and starts sucking air. I could possibly stain your cover over an extended period of time. It radiates pretty good heat for its size. I have a piece of expanded metal i'll put over the top and grill things from time to time.

The heat is mainly straight up, you have to be right on the stove to get a good feel.

Double wall doesn't really allow that radiant heat out in the same way.

It burns through a lot of wood really quick.

I think we've got a Yukon. Like most really hot pits it won't smoke much once it's really going.

I think the Solo Stove hype is a bit of overkill, it's just a solid firepit you don't really have to commit to. But I'll also say that inevitably with neighbors over the dads are naturally drawn to drinking around it so it's a solid communal thing if that's what you're after.

there's lots of videos showing how the heat goes up and not out. so if you're sitting around one hoping to stay warm, not going to happen.

Hilarious. I'm pretty sure Bill the Caveman figured that shite out the first time he got a spark to ignite.

We have a few of the Solo stoves on the back patio of the hunting camp. They are good to hang out by. You get to see a fire and dont have to deal with the smoke. It certainly not like hanging out around a tractor rim, but it puts a fair amount of heat out for its size. They do consume a lot of wood for the btu's you get however.

Is that with the stand or without? I have bought from them wholesale and saved some local TD peeps a few bucks but it looks like you are in FL? They run sales all the time that get really close to my cost so while its not a ton less is less.

How good are they? We live in south Florida, so we don't need a firepit to keep us warm - it would mainly be just to sit around an occasionally do S'mores. I would be happy with a gas fireplace but for I love making fire and I'm intrigued at the possibility of cooking on it.

I love my bonfire, might get a Yukon one day if I have a bigger area where I want a permanent fire pit I keep mine on a trashcan dolly now to make it mobile. I keep mine on my 12' tall covered back porch. I dont get it full tilt under it but I can have a pretty good fire going without issues so far. I have never cooked on mine...id rather just fire up an actual cooking device but thats just me.

So I have some questions:

Does it generate a lot of smoke or heat?

Once it's going it's probably 98% smoke-free...its really neat and makes a nice-looking fire. Puts out heat but it may not generate outward as much as a regular open fire pit with smoke. They have heat deflectors now but I never used one. I usually roll it off the back porch until irs going then roll it back in when the smoke stops. Once its good and hot you can have smaller fires without the smoke.

If we keep it on our uncovered patio, will it stain or discolor the patio bricks?

With the ring stand I think you can use it on wood with no issues. I have never had it stain my concrete on the back porch nor have I had anyone tell me it has.

How is it to cook on? I'm seeing cooking as a definite way to stain the bricks, but is there a way to mitigate that (thinking of maybe getting a griddle option).

Never have.

With that said there is one a buddy just got from academy for like 200 bucks. It might be bigger than the bonfire and a tad smaller than the yukon. I have no hands-on with it but it looks like the same kind of concept with the double burn of the smoke/gasses to make it smoke-free.

I have a Breeo and a Solo and the Breeo is much higher quality. The Solo is smaller for camping trips but mostly just sits in the corner, pouting

I'm not sold on any particular brand. I've seen a lot of similar products and refer to all of them as "Solos".

I do want a surround so that there is a place to set a plate and drink on if sitting around it.

We have the smaller Solo, and she bought the heat deflector thing that goes on top. It does a really good job of pushing the heat to the sides. This is especially better if you are sitting around it.

You'll get by with the smaller one. I think Costco has a sale on them. They're really nice. My neighbor used his when I visited on Sunday and the flames are beautiful. He built his own deflector lid that dramatically improves the flow of heat.

You can fit quite a few logs on top.

As someone who lived in South Florida with a fireplace in their home, we struggled to used it more than once a year. The good thing about the Solo pits are that they work well and are mobile.

I can imagine that the cooking and cleaning would be a bit of a pain, but if that's your jam then go for it.

I love mine Jax. Sure it burns a lot of wood but that's what it's there for. Current view.
