So I had a strong desire for a burger this weekend and decided to put the Mason"s burger lovers crowd to the test. I look at their menu and decide to order the Bleu Cheese burger. I order it cooked medium and fries. It's advertised as...

quote:

Bleu Cheese Burger chunks of real bleu cheese stuffed in the half pound beef patty, then topped with Swiss cheese 8.25

I know, bleu cheese AND Swiss, but I decide to go with it anyway, and so, let me tell what I am presented with. I get a mid well to well done piece of meat, a small container of bleu cheese salad dressing, and no bleu cheese chunks in or on top of the burger itself, oh, and onion rings because I suppose the "chef de cuisine" at Masons desides it pairs better than the fries. Turns out they were right. It saved the burger. I ended up putting it on the burger and it did add a livable flavor profile and texture.

What is it about this burger that would ever rank it at the top of Baton Rouge's burger scene? Is it the fact that it's a F ton of food for the money, or maybe the sweet bun, or is there something I'm missing here? Please learn me.

Masons has had a damn strong burger for as long as I can remember. I haven't been in a few months, but I can promise you this, the new GM that's coming back very soon( if not already,) will have that kitchen ON POINT.

The burger that's famous is the shrimp burger, but I personally dig a big ole bacon cheddar burger, half fries, half rings.

Maybe it was an off night, or maybe the kitchen is sucking wind right now, but that thing I ate was anything but the best in BR. It wasn't horrrible or inedible or anything like that, just nowhere close to the hype of among the best burgers in BR. That's why I suppose I was so aggravated with the salad dressing and no bleu cheese.

There just has to be something to what everyone raves over like that, so maybe we'll just toss it up as bad timing.

When does the new staff take over Jambo? I would actually like to try them with their game face on. I would.

I've been preaching this for years. Other than getting a decent breakfast, which is no better than any other breakfast, Mason's food has been incredibly overrated, and some of the items just aren't good at all...Like you said, the burgers are pretty big so maybe that paired with the sweet bun that a lot of people seem to like make it a winner for them on size alone. The burger ain't special.

Mason's burgers were never that good. It's one of those overrated neighborhood places like Fleur de Lis pizza.

Mike, I know we have a lot of the same favorites in town, so maybe it was just an off night. I'm not knighting the place whatsoever, and I've certainly had burgers there than were hit or miss like any other place. I'm just saying when they're on, they're killer. I'll ask my buddy when he's stepping in for sure today, and report back. FYI, the breakfast burger with fried egg, patty sausage, and bacon is legit as well.

We do Jambo, and I don't think you were knighting them at all. I was just judging from other people's fawning over their burgers, and I guess given that I was a bit disappointed. I will be glad to give them another shot. It's not as if they failed miserably and without redemption or the food was inedible or anything like that. It's just that my experience recently was quite a bit underwhelming.

You lost me on sweet bun.

Still looking for a better burger in BR than J. Alexander's.

I would try it again, but last weekend I had it, and it was bland.

No promised jalapenos cooked into the patty either.

Sounds like they need to change their menu if they're carrying out what their menu says.

I find they forget if you don't remind them..

I've had the same issue with that burger as well as the Bleu Cheese burger Mike had. They didn't "stuff" it with anything.

But the first time I went I ordered just a normal bacon cheeseburger but requested the jalapeno patty and it was by far my favorite burger there. So I would recommend anyone to try that one, but request the jalapeno patty. It really made the burger. The other two times were definitely subpar.

I don't eat the burgers and never have. Just not what I'm interested in when I go there. But the poached eggs with hollandaise over crab cakes with hash browns covered with cheese, sour cream and bacon is pretty damn tasty.

And they do a good and I'd step off and say exceptional crawfish étouffée. And that is hard to find these days.

I don't give masons love for much, but their Cajun shrimp burger(when cooked right) is a damn fine burger.

This. I like the Mason's burgers (especially the Breakfast Burger) and I also like Fleur de Lis... but that being said, both are overrated. Thought the shrimp burger was average at best.
