Looks like the entire Pihakis Restaurant group- is in jeopardy\ as well.

I would really like to get to the bottom of this. I went to his Charleston shop and got to meet him and really felt like a stand up guy. His BBQ was pretty solid (but not the best ive had). I got a feel that locals did not care for his spot too much.

This is true. The local hot spot for BBQ is Lewis BBQ, not too far from Rodney's location.

Sounds like he got in bed with some bad business people

I expect (hope) his check cleared.

The original family Scott’s BBQ is a hole in the wall in Hemingway SC. Great food from a dumpy location.
Rodney opened in Charleston, and while some of it’s pretty good, it doesn’t match the level of the old dump in Hemingway. I’ve eaten there several times, some of what I’ve had tasted like it was cooked on gas instead of wood.
When he opened in Charleston he immediately got a lot of acclaim from food reviewers, and started attracting more of a hipster/social media crowd, in my opinion. I like Rodney, but it’s easy to see some of his publicity was DEI driven. I haven’t been there in probably 1 1/2 years or so.
Opening up more restaurants, again in my opinion, was a huge mistake. His style of whole hog over wood/coals takes time and attention, he’s spread himself too thin.

Lewis BBQ and Palmira (a bit different style, with Puerto Rican influences) both put Rodney to shame.

Loan documents provided in the suit show Pihakis agreed to pay close to $11,800 twice per month on the $350,000 loan for a period of 18 months, making 36 payments in all at a 25.99% interest rate.
Looked up a local article here in Charleston, found this.
$23,600 per month. 26% interest. Damn.

That’s rates with people who have had repossessions. That’s absolutely egregious.

I’ve only dined at the Greenville, SC, location and was wholly unimpressed.

That’s PayDay Loans rates.

Yep. The entity was already struggling to incur that kind of debt. It likely couldn’t get conventional rates.

I’ve heard the same. The guy who started Lewis worked with/learned from Aaron Franklin in Texas, and he’s really done well in Charleston,
IMO that kind of business is difficult to franchise, once you lose daily control of what’s happening the food quality and consistency will suffer.
Same thing happened with Rodney Scott. His Charleston location wasn’t as good/consistent day in and day out as the old family place in Hemingway, then he screwed the pooch by opening more locations further away.

Palmira for sides.
Lewis for meats.
Palmira's piccodillo empanadas are amazing.
Hometeam if you within walking distance and don't have transportation.

I enjoyed this place when I was in Charleston. Thought it was really good compared to what I usually get in New Orleans. Of course, I felt some items I do better myself on my smoker.

Agree with all of this. Been to Scott's in Hemingway several times (we used to get our whole hog from them when we'd cook them at my buddy's farm) and enjoyed hanging out with the old guys on a Friday night, sipping bourbon around the smokehouse. Good folks who do a good job with whole hog.
I believe Rodney started opening his own restaurants after he won the Beard Award and it appears that he got in bed with the wrong financial backer and, as you said, spread himself too thin. The same thing happened with Sticky Fingers. I'll never go back to the one here in Greenville. It was horrible the last time I was there and nowhere close to being as good as the original.
