I believe Rodney started opening his own restaurants after he won the Beard Award and it appears that he got in bed with the wrong financial backer and, as you said, spread himself too thin.
First mistake was giving him a Beard Award, whoever voted for him to get that did him a great disservice.
Reminds me of the article I saw a couple of days ago, a smashburger joint in San Francisco closed after pics hit social media of rolls of ground meat and a big jar of mayonnaise sitting on the pavement outside the door. No one (including the “Executive Chef” was there to take delivery.
First issue, a burger joint doesn’t need an “Executive Chef”.
Second, the pic of the owner (who, like Rodney, decided to open multiple restaurants) showcased 3 different Michelin Star awards on the wall.
For a place that serves smash burgers. Smash burger places don’t deserve Michelin Stars, the process has turned into a DEI festival.
I like Rodney, heck of a nice guy. I’ve had his food catered a couple of times for big groups, everything was excellent, better than his restaurant served, every detail covered. His type of food can’t be rushed, it takes a lot of attention to detail. There were people who tried talking him out of expanding, but that Beard award went to his head, and some backers who thought the sky was the limit played into his thought process.

You've probably captured the Scott dynamics well. He should learn from the (Terry) Black's. They crank out large quantities of high-quality BBQ across several sites.

Neat experience and good food, but a touch overrated IMO.

Dang. We were just there less than a month ago and it was pretty good. Brisket surprised me, better than I anticipated, and the pulled pork was super on point. Locals said it was Rodney Scott or Lewis, and I made the call that we should do RS because the wife had never had SC style BBQ.
Hate to see it.
Hate to see it.

Palmira (a bit different style, with Puerto Rican influences)
Is Palmira the one on Ashley River Road just past 526 and on the right if going to Drayton Hall and Magnolia? Haven't been there yet but it's on our to-do list next time we are over there.
We at at Rodney's place on King Street once, summer of 2022. It was good. Loved the whole hog plate and the pork skins that came with the whole hog sandwich. Also probably the best collards I've had at a bbq place. But, as others have mentioned, I read that it was hit or miss and apparently we got lucky that day.

The beef cheeks are great, I can't argue with that.
I'll have to try the wings. I've only ever gotten the BBQ.
Getting off subject a bit, I've been here for 9 months for work and I've found the city itself to have high quality ingredients but I'm used to heavily seasoned LA food so it doesn't hit the same to me. I usually go to restaurants around here for the view, prioritizing food second.

I agree with that. Their sides definitely leave something to be desired.

Lewis BBQ and Palmira (a bit different style, with Puerto Rican influences) both put Rodney to shame.
Yup. His location here had no vibe whatsoever and had a drive through. BBQ was fine but I can get good bbq and a way more fun scene and vibe not far away at home team (and gamechangers) or Lewis with much better bbq.

IMO that kind of business is difficult to franchise, once you lose daily control of what’s happening the food quality and consistency will suffer.
I’m pretty sure it’s not a franchise in Greenville. I’m friendly with one of John Lewis’ partners (Ben Garbee) and he’s up in Greenville quite a bit. They had their hatch chile roast at that location instead of here last year. Which disappointed this guy.
