My wife thinks I’m a freak because when I make rice and gravy, I usually do a can of peas, either field peas, blackeye peas, great northern peas or butter beans and corn and mix them all together with my rice and gravy on my plate when I eat.

I made some smothered turkey wings with a roux based gravy the other night and damn it was fantastic with the field peas and corn.

Ever mix them or do you just eat them separately?

Many years ago a new guy came on our boat and he used to put mayo with white beans & rice(or mustard) , red beans & rice, field peas, etc. We all thought it was gross. Tried it after about 2 months-not to bad.

It's impossible for roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas and corn to be on my plate and not become a poor man's casserole

Exactly.

But mixing them together gives you all those flavors in each bite.

I always mix my field peas in with my rice and gravy. They go so well together.

A friend once talked me into putting a dabble of mustard on red beans. It’s actually really good.

I mix corn on my plate. It’s not much different from a beef stew with vegetables.

I'll skip the corn but some sort of pea like field, blackeye, purple hull in a rice and gravy are my favorite meals. When my kids were young it was an almost weekly staple at my house, we even gave it a name. We called it Super Supper. Haven't made it in a few years but it was definitely a thing at my house.

No. Foods have their own spots on the plate and don't mix. They are allowed to touch, but don't mix. I can't stand my sides to mix with my rice and gravy, but we're gonna fight if you tell me there isn't some kind of vegetable to go with it.

The perfect plate is an elementary school lunchroom tray.

(He corrected his w/r substitution before kindergarten.)

IWEI without a doubt, but generally speaking I prefer multiple items then say just a casserole. Now there's some casseroles I love and that's all good too.

I'm not sure your combo in the OP would be better together then individually, imo.

I have several sets of lovely compartment plates for various type meals. Some are the Fiesta plates.

My new favorite disposable plates are below. They're large (12.5")with more compartments than most disposable plates. However, they're so sturdy that you could wash and reuse them if you wished. I do not do that. I have about 150 right now. I gave some packs of 50 as Christmas gifts to some appreciative people. I was genuinely thrilled when I found them!

They were perfect for our NYD's foods!!! No mustard green liquor got into my black eyed peas or pork, rice and gravy and my cornbread stayed dry until I made the choice where to dip it!!! It was glorious!

Photo below is from the Namaste FB page.

You can find them on Amazon.

If I'm having rice and gravy, I'm also having Le Sueur peas and, yes, I'm mixing them together. If corn is also on the table, I'll mix that in, too.

Rice is made to mix with other stuff.
