REMINDER: F&DB Cooking Challenge, April 13, 2021. Is it SOUP, yet?

Posted on 4/8/21 at 9:25 am
Soup challenge coming up. Submission thread will be open by 9:00 am. Have you made yours?
Speaking of which, how do you decide what to make for a challenge? How do you voters decide which dishes to vote for? What’s your cooking history?

Not yet. It'll be a last minute prep for mine most likely.

Honestly it's all just been a little time thinking about what I want to make. There's no magic decision making process.

Equal parts creativity, execution, and what appeals to me the most.

What’s your cooking history?
I usually burn grilled cheese sandwiches.

I either go with something I know how to make really well already, or pull something off the web I feel to be creative and adjust it to my taste.

If the entries were a restaurant menu, and I get 3 free items, what would I order?

Grew up learning to cook coonass from my step father. Married a women who can't cook, but likes good food, and I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen.

Surprisingly, I made it 7 days ago.

No rhyme or reason, really. Since the contest is online and nobody is eating it, I try to lean more into photogenic foods. But that isn't always easy to come up with. Soups, stews, pastas, etc. tend to not be photogenic like solid foods are, so this one will be interesting.

A mix of creative, talented, and what I'd eat first if it was laid out in front of me. We lean more into familiar foods and visually comforting dishes here than we do "foams" and other fancy molecular gastronomy type things.

None.

Made it two days ago.
My wife was craving for it so I made it. It fits the soup criteria so I’m rolling with it.

Nope...have to really nail something down still but I have a idea.

There are things I want to cook that I have seen and if it happens to fit I might use that. I might ask the wife what she feels like having. Or I might track out some recipes and combine or alter to fit my taste buds or desired result.

I try to find ways to narrow it down which is hard because they are usually all something id like to eat. Then I think what would I order from a menu with pics of the dish's.

Just being married to a woman who doesn't like to cook and would much rather clean up after for 18 years. Best friend growing up was always in the restaurant kitchens all the way up to executive chef so we always let him cook for us He moved away about 8 years ago so I have had to step my game up My mom was always cooking growing up too so I have been around it.

Made it Sunday. The pictures are crap because we were on vacation and forgot the good camera, and the soup kept steaming up the microwave above it. It didn't turned out as I hoped, but I'll still submit. Cooking in an AirBnB isn't always easy, sometimes they just don't have the best stuff. I also used a vegetable broth which I made the mistake of smelling first, it smelt awful to me thus ruining the taste of the soup for me. But everyone else like it, so that's good.

I'm no chef and am extremely picky so I just make something that sounds good to me.

Since we can't taste it, I go by creativity.

I'm can make a mean cup of Easy Mac should tell you enough.

Nope. I struck out on my main ingredient, calling an audible this weekend.

I always cook somthing that I've never cooked before. Its part of the "challenge" imo
quote:

Creativity/uniqueness, depth, and balance, which is normally the criteria when I order at a restaurant.

Drinking and cooking has been a regular weekend activity for about 15 years.
I did 100 diffrent tacos for 100 consecutive Tuesdays a few years back (all documented on my Instagram). Currently on week #22 of a "Saturday/Sunday Sandwich" streak, Also on instagram

Unless it's an ingredient I use often, I usually do an google search and see what interests me

I look at technique, visual appeal since we aren't tasting, and then if I would order it to eat.

What is your cooking history

How do I find you on instagram?

1) Have you made yours?
Yes I have. However, there is another I should do also and I am still conflicted about that one.
2) how do you decide what to make for a challenge?
For soup, I ask myself "what would Miss Gris Gris want me to cook for her."
3) How do you voters decide which dishes to vote for?
Since I can't taste I look at the ingredients and try to decide if I would like it. Then eye appeal I guess.
4) What’s your cooking history?
I started out in the concession stand at Skyview drive in theatre (West Jackson, just north of Tall Man's Pool Hall. Long gone now.) I got my bones there as a professional popcorn popper. Later on, I worked for several years as head second shift grill guy and fry cook at T-Willies Frostop. Then I switched over to a semiprofessional career as a food eater.
Career wise, I grew up in pharmaceutical chemistry and microbiology labs and dinner cooking, since the wife and I usually both worked. Cooking is a lot like lab work, so those years helped.
