PS The white elephant in the room is those 6-10 servings of BREAD at the FOUNDATION of that stupid food pyramid.

Question: What's the difference in how the body processes a spoonful of sugar vs. processing a baked potato or slice of white bread?

Answer: NONE. Its the same thing. simple sugars. Ask any diabetic.

Here is a good read on the different kind of fats and how they are good for us.

people shouldn't needs lots of studies telling them whether red meat is bad or good. you just need common sense: exercise and eat a balanced, properly portioned, diet and you will be fine. avoid processed crap w/ tons of ingredients on the label (a handy rule of thumb--if it has more than five ingredients on the package and/or you cannot easily pronounce all the ingredients, don't buy it). shop the perimeter of the store; stay out of the middle.

I probably eat 10 lbs of red meat and chicken combined each week for the past 25 years. I am fine! I could lose about 10-15 lbs to be in great shape, but I no longer work out...so that is expected. My cholesterol is low, too.

I'm pretty sure the reason that the food pyramid looks the way it does is not because of science, but because of farmers and their lobbyists.

simple as this really

I thought it was pretty common knowledge by the folks who care (the people on this board) that the pyramid was garbage ....

my wife made a peach cobbler this morning with barely any peaches

do a google on this subjec

First you accuse me of not reading the article, which I did btw, and now you're telling me to google it? Did you even understand my OP? which was talking about how we can't compare us to the kenyan tribes man. I said nothing about adverse cholesterol effects or not, I was merely stating that just because those people can eat red meat everyday and be in superb physical condition, that their diet can not be compared to ours.

quote:

are you saying that the test is invalid because somehow these people's reaction to food and protein is somehow different than ours?

I'm not saying the test is invalid, but it is not a fair comparison. And do you not understand that different groups of people react differently to the things they eat/drink? For example, asian people do not have an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, while most caucasian people do, which is why white ppl can generally drink more than asians ppl bc their body metabolizes alcohol better. It is not far out of this realm that its possible the kenyan tribes react differently to certain types of food than us. They live on the with lions for crying out loud, you think the way our stomach have adapted to the life in suburbs is the same as those out in the african plains??

quote:

are you going to insinuate that the way livestock is fed in our country changes the way the body responds to protein at the cellular level which somehow causes heart disease for us?

I never insinuated that, but it is absolutely plausible.

ETA: If you want to get technical about some of these things, note your thread title

quote:

Red meat is GOOD for you

The point of the original posted article was that they DONT KNOW if its good, just that it may not be bad. So your title is misleading.

Another interseting thing I bet most of you don't know.

WATER CONTENT OF MEAT AND POULTRY
Product Name-----Percentage Water Raw Cooked
Chicken fryer, whole-------------------------66% 60%
White meat chicken, with skin-----------69% 61%
Dark meat chicken, with skin------------66% 59%
Ground beef, 85% lean---------------------64% 60%
Ground beef, 73% lean---------------------56% 55%
Beef, eye of round----------------------------73% 65%
Beef, whole brisket---------------------------71% 56%

quote:

Meat and poultry are composed of naturally occurring water, muscle, connective tissue, fat, and bone. People eat meat for the muscle. The muscle is approximately 75% water (although different cuts may have more or less water) and 20% protein, with the remaining 5% representing a combination of fat, carbohydrate, and minerals.

i always lol at the people in restaurants diligently slicing every single shred of fat off their meat. talk about sheep

America's problem is eating too much food in general. Not any particular food, or method of cooking.

Thanks for the info though. I'm gonna have a steak sandwich for lunch now.

These people should just eat a chicken breast if they do this. A good steak is all about great marbling. Excess fat scares some ppl but not me. In fact, whenever we go to a hibachi, we usually have to ask for the fat that the chef cuts off of ppl's meats.

At least some of this may simply be due to the fact that Masai people don't eat very much and walk several miles a day.
