Not many in the South, but Penn Station is really, really good.

1) Firehouse
2) Jimmy John's (try the wheat bread- it's incredible)
3) Jersey Mike's
4) Quizno's (if it still even exists)
5) Subway

Honorable Mention: My favorite out of all of them was Lenny's, but it closed along with JM's a few years back. They were basically in the same parking lot along with Newk's, and Firehouse is right across the street. No way that many sandwich shops could survive in the same vicinity

I never see Larry's Giant subs mentioned here. They are pretty good.

I;d never had Jersey Mike's and this thread inspired me to give it a try for lunch today. Got the Philly Cheesesteak. It was okay. They kinda skimp on the onions and peppers though. Needed more to elevate it to elite status.

Their philly cheese steak is the best outside of a shop that specializes in just cheesesteaks.

I’ll go one step further and say it’s the best cheesesteak I’ve had, period.

My local JJ are awful. Bread and mayo sandwich with a handful of slimy lettuce.

You have to search for the meat.

Gross-would not recommend.

Jersey Mike's (The Original Italian)
Blimpie (Blimpie Best)
Firehouse (Italian)
Subway (Italian BMT)
Jimmy John's (Italian Night Club)

I have never had Penn Station, but I have heard it's very good! I Prefer cold classic Italian deli meat sandwiches, that's why Blimpie is so high for me as the Blimpie Best is my all time favorite sandwich. I have them second because I cant get it anymore here in Baton Rouge. I understand the hate for Subway, but IMO it just really depends on the one you go too and if the person making your sub gives a damn.

Mandeville and Slidell are the closest. Also available in Hammond and Red Stick.
