Ralphs on Jones Creek sold, will become Shoppers Value

The group that owns and operates the Piggly Wiggly and Shoppers Value supermarkets in Baton Rouge and Lafayette has acquired Ralph’s Supermarket at 6576 Jones Creek and is converting the 34,000-square-foot store to a Shoppers Value—the seventh in the local market.
The sale of the store included inventory and equipment but not the land, which is leased through Stirling Properties.
Garnett “Skipper” Jones, the majority owner of the local Piggly Wiggly and Shoppers Value stores, began converting the Piggly Wiggly locations in this market to Shoppers Value outlets earlier this year because he says the business model makes more sense. Shoppers Value sells all its items at cost plus a 10% markup, which is applied at the register.
“We dramatically lower the cost and double the volume,” Jones says. “We’ll do twice the volume Ralph’s did.”
Only one store in Baton Rouge, at 3873 Choctaw Drive, and one in Lafayette remain under the Piggly Wiggly brand. Jones plans to convert the Lafayette store to a Shoppers Value later this year and eventually the Choctaw Drive store, too.
As for the former Ralph’s, Jones say it’s a great location for the Shopper’s Value concept. The store is closed this week for renovation and will reopen next week under the new name. A grand opening is scheduled for Aug. 31.
Ralph’s owner Ronnie Trosclair says his family decided to sell the supermarket so it can concentrate on its other Ralph’s Supermarket locations, both of which are in Gonzales, and its Plaquemine supermarket, Butcher Boy.

I haven't been out in that area in forever, but is the clientele out there the type that needs to shop at a Shoppers Value? I figured the store was for a lower income crowd?
Is Ralph's a higher end store, or a typical AG type store?
Edit: It looks fairly nice on Google Maps, wonder what the play is here with SV?

That is so odd. I've been in SV, if that's what took over Piggly Wiggly on Government.
It doesn't fit in the Ralph's area..

I wonder if Shoppers Value takes the food stamp card?

I lived in the area when I was back in BR for a bit, pretty normal area. I feel like the Chase on Jones Creek got robbed weekly, but other than that pretty quite. Haha
Did the Neighborhood Walmart on Sherwood/Coursey open up yet? Having two of those around Ralphs probably did some damage to them. Owner was probably looking for a way out. I didn't mind Ralphs for a quick stop to get something, never did all my grocery shopping at it though, seemed kinda pricey to me.

Seems like a good time for Ralphs to get out... they're about to tear up Jones Creek for construction.

Yeah not the one on Coursey, but the one they are building by the old Ryan's steakhouse at the Sherwood/Coursey intersection.

Nothing has ever made it in that shopping center and probably never will.

I don't get the Shoppers Value concept, "Everything is 10% extra."

My inlaws are pissed about this. They live n Lake at White Oak and shopped at Ralphs.

I was never even a little bit impressed with Ralph's. What will become ghetto apartments next door if it hasn't already become that is perfect for the Shoppers Value's concept. SV actually seems better than Ralph's, they sell about the same stuff and SV's shelves look more stocked than Ralph's ever did. Might be an opening week thing though.
Walmart sells the 2-pack of huge Bounty paper towels for about $2 cheaper than SV, and that's before SV adds the 10%...So not everything at SV is a bargain.

I don't get this. You see an advertised price and then they tack on 10% and tax?

Supposedly the price is their cost, and then at the register they add 10% and tax. I don't know if that is true, but it is fairly cheap. Of course, I never grocery shop at Walmart so I don't know how it compares.

It has opened, has anybody been? How bad is it?
Posted on 8/30/15 at 8:43 am to Tigerpaw123
Did this used to be a Delchamps?

It actually seems a little better than Ralph's, but that's not saying much. Shelves have more inventory on them than Ralph's ever did and the items are basically the same.
