I want to play. I'm currently 215 and I'd like to get back down to precollege weight of 180. I've kicked the soft drinks so that's a good start

Diet alone is not working so this week I started "100 pushups" plan M-W-F and "Couch to 5K" T-TH-S. Feel better already.

oh but it is. simple physics. for every 3,500 calorie deficiet you create, you lose a pound. magic.
the problem of course is your body doesn't like to play fair..it will squirrel away water, infuriatingly show you've gained a couple of pounds even after a day of fasting and other assorted tricks in an attempt to foil your resolve and return it to its normal fat-storing process.
you have to be smarter..exercise will only help in that it does burn a few more calories over the time you're doing it..and the mroe muscle mass u have, the more calories you'll burn during the day to support those muscles...but that ain't goign to be the answer. don't be fooled by these idiots pushing themselves for 3-4 hours in the gym every day and then looking at the camera saying 'this is the only way you'll win'. bullshite.
the only way you win is to cut way back on what you're putting in your mouth, period. create a deficiet and since nature abhors a vacuum, you'll turn from a weight-gaining machine into a weight-losing machine.
just ask myth..sucker hasn't done a bit of exercise and he's kicking all our asses.
(just kidding myth)

I'm definitely not a gym rat, more like a 20 to 30 minute man. I'm in my 50's and staying between 1500 and 1700 cals a day. I've got to get the old ticker in shape. My quest is to lose the 15 lbs I gained this "fat season" which began in October. You're right though, the 3 lb scale wobble is maddening.

What you consume is vitally important but you cannot discount the value of exercise. It is important to remember there are many types of exercise. How you exercise will contribute to it's effect.
Low intensity steady state cardio (walking) is beneficial in the calories burned.
High intensity interval training is different. The real benefit comes from something called EPOC (energy post exerecise oxygen consumtion). What that means after such high intensity bouts, your body will burn more calories than normal even though the exercise has ceased. Studies have shown metabolism to be boosted for up to 48 hours post training.
Exercise also changes the hormone profile which is extremely important for fat loss (not simply weight loss).

He isn't discounting the value of exercise but at the end of the day it is not 100% necessary if you maintain a proper calorie deficit. I'm proof of that although I did walk about 2 miles a day 3 to 5 days a week in September, October and November.
But even before I started walking, I lost 70 or more pounds. Diet is the key, with exercise aiding you in the loss along with making you much healthier in the long run.
The average person starts a gym regimen, gets burned out and quits the whole shebang.
Some people are better off just changing their diet until they reach their goal. I've tried the torture at the gym method many times over my life, yet the one time I don't make exercise the key, I finally lose most of the weight.
Now...... at some point I will be getting back to the gym to firm things up, but that will be more of a tuneup than a diet or long term plan.

totally agree, myth ... i think one needs to start a diet first, lose 20-30 pounds off the bat and then slowly work in some exercise .. in the end, the diet is going to benefit you from a weight standpoint far greater than working out will ... if you work out at the gym 6 days a week, but don't watch what you eat or drink and take in 3K calories a day, you will probably not lose weight ... too many people try to start the diet AND working out all at the same time .. then they burn out after a few weeks and blow off the diet too ...

speaking of dieting .. i saw a buddy yesterday that i hadn't seen in about four months .. he looked noticeably thinner .. he told me he has lost 60 pounds over the last 6 months .. he said he isn't really dieting .. he just cut out ALL fast food .. stopped eating out and cooks at home .. stopped drinking beer and now drinks about 3 or 4 glasses of cabernet sauvignon a week .. and doesn't eat after 8PM ... he said other than that he's eating gumbo, spaghetti and meatballs, crawfish etouffee, etc. .. just cooking it at home ..
it really hit home to me just how bad all the fast food and really eating out in general is for your waist line .. btw, he said the only thing he has conciously cut back on is his sodium consumption .. he stopped adding salt to things and does read the labels .. he is keeping the sodium to 2,000 mg or less a day ...

I couldn't agree more. That's what I did before my exercise program.

Not sure about that one. The program I'm on specifically put me on about a 3,000 calorie per day diet and I am losing lbs while gaining muscle at the same time.
I guess I'm just eating a different kind of calorie nowadays. But, I gotta say...I was confused at first but I decided I'd stick with their plan and now I'm over 3 wks into it and I have to say they were right. It's working like a champ!
