a couple of more quick points:

- you're in a battle..pull out all the stops to get the weight off as fast as possible..so you dont have to do weird stuff eating-wise when your'e done. the goal is to get the weight off..so you can stop dieting and enjoy yourself. dont spend your whole life dieting..get the weight off..then you can go back to fairly normal eating..as long as you keep an eye on the scale and don't let a 5lb gain turn into 15 before you take action.

- once you're where you want to be, you will have to pay attention to your calorie intake. however you'll get pretty good at calculating calorie content of food you eat on a normal schedule so its not hard. the biggest problem now is people sipmly don't pay attention. if you're aware you've already had 1500 calories to eat before you head home at the end of the day, its easier to discipline yourself not to go overboard.

- AVOID RESTAURANT SALADS!!! they are the devil. i think the applebees southwest salad clocks in at 1800 calories. i used to feel so proud of myself for getting a salad every tuesday night when i took the kids there (kids eat free on tues) and wondered why i wasnt losing weight..lmao..well hell i guess not.

ps give me your age, weight height (63 right?) and level of activity (1 being you sit most of the time, 5 being you work out like a madman) and i can plug it into a formula to give you an almost perfect analysis of how many calories you're burning in a day right now.

Thanks for the tips

I live in an apartment so I don't have any stairs or anything I can run up and down before going pee or anything, but I do live upstairs and my complex is basically a big circle that I can walk around.. I never measured the distance but it takes ~15 minutes to walk around it so I imagine it's about 1/2 a mile, maybe a little more.

I've seen people do the Atkins diet before, and I like the prospect of eating tons of meat, I'm a definite carnivore lol. As far as not eating for lunch or eating as little as possible... I'm hypoglycemic and if I skip a meal or don't get enough sugar (or something that coverts into sugar while being digested), it hits me hard. Dizziness, cold sweats, can't think straight. A very desperate feeling is the only way to describe it. This is one of the reasons I want to drop the weight.. So I have to question if the Atkins would be right for me since carbs turn into sugar after being digested.. Do you think that Atkins would prove to provide enough sugar to prevent that from happening?

As far as exercise is concerned.. this is my biggest issue. I find that when I get it in my head to start exercising, I last about 2, maybe 3 weeks and I start getting exhausted, like I don't sleep enough, and eventually I'll sleep through alarms, or wake up and while still half asleep turn off the alarm, etc.. but maybe I usually push myself too hard and wear myself down? So maybe if I do like you say, just work it up in increments, I'll work slowly into it rather than killing myself..

ETA:
22 Y.O, 6'3, say 350.
Level of activity? Guessing about a 1. I don't ever work out at this point. I do clean up and stuff but idk if you count that as activity. I wake up, work 8 hours at a desk taking calls, go home and play on my computer or xbox. I do go out on weekends typically. Drink beer... shite atkins would mean giving up beer huh?

1. Your body is burning 3,346 calories a day at the LOWEST level of activity. This can be used to your advantage especially in the beginning.

2. Forget the exercise thing for now. Its really much less important initially than focusing on the food. MYTH dropped 100 and most of the initial loss came with very little exercise. Don't get too caught up on the exercise piece right now and lose focus on the food. After you've dropped a significant amount you'll be much more motivated to move around more.

3. Regarding Atkins. You can eat all day long..just keep eating low carb foods; cheese sticks and rolled up meats are good for lunch..nuts, etc. Try it for at least a week and see if it causes you problems with being hypoglycemic. Your health problems will also start to melt away as you drop weight..like magic. Your skin is incredibly resilient as well..you'll find it snaps back as you lose the weight and tightens up even as you roll back the pounds.

3. Yep, alcohol is a big no-no. There are low car beers (michelob ultra is 2.6 carbs) but alcohol in general screws up the weight loss. Remember, you're not giving it up forever..just giving it up until you're back on track with your weight.

It wouldn't hurt to pick up the Atkins book either if you're serious because it does a really good job of explaining the science behind it and why it works.

Really that much? o.o holy crap that's a lot of calorie burn.

And I may have to wait til I get paid again to start all of this.. Need to have grocery money to buy meats and such rofl. Good news is I get paid in a week..

And I am serious about this.. I have been fat my entire life and I'm sick of it. I can feel myself gaining weight and I don't like it, I look at myself in the mirror and I realize how much of a hypocrite I am. If I saw a girl anywhere near as big as I am, I'd be grossed out and wouldn't think about doing anything more than talking to her.. but yet somehow I expect the opposite to magically happen. I have a problem with self-motivation. I have tried to lose weight several times.. but I had a self-revelation the other day. It shouldn't take any external support to get me to drop the weight.. I have to do it on my own. I already knew this but.. it's like the idea really sunk in the other day. I was sitting around thinking about how nice it would be to not be out of breath from walking upstairs after I get home.

while true..it certainly helps to have others to lean on and to celebrate the milestones.

you'll get there..geez i'd love to be overweight and only 22. seriously if us old men can do it you can definitely knock this out.

if you've never tried atkins..you'll be amazed. the reason i'm pushing this so hard is for peopl not used to cutting back on food, atkins doesn't ask you to..you can eat as much as you want..just from a certain group of foods.

its all about getting into the right mindset and atkins can bridge the gap between suddenly attempting to cut your calories in half (doomed to fail) and getting you motivated that you CAN lose the weight.

dude..you've totally got this. losing weight is all about konwledge. ignore the crap you see on tv that p90x or the latest gym doo-dad for your house is going to somehow magically give you rock-hard abs.

losing weight is not as hard as it seems. plus we're here to kick your arse and keep you honest

eta and i'm heading to a friend's house to play xbox for hours and hours tonight so i feel your pain there.

find something you really like, then make it social. find other people to do it with.

is there anything active you like to do? kayaking, kickboxing, running, biking, swimming, basketball, whatever.

there are adult leagues you can join, classes at gyms, etc.

bc if its boring and it sucks, you won't stick with it.

eta, you are 22...lose the weight now! im only 30 and its about 10 times harder to lose weight than when i was in my early 20s. its also easier for guys....you can do it ;)

someone your size, just start out walking. eat right and you'll drop weigh pretty quick.

once you drop some weight you can up the intensity. Weights, jogging, stuff like that. Id get an iPod to have some music when you exercise. Just get into a routine, tell yourself its only 30 minutes out of your whole 24 hour day that you need to get out and move. Anyone can walk. Once you get a routine going, you may like it.

your eating doesnt look to bad considering your weight. I think if you just tweak it a little, you would be fine. I wouldn't do Atkins. But that is just me. You are trying to change your life style. Why put it off a few weeks and try Atkins now? It's a gimmick. If you are going to change, do it now. No sense in waiting. Atkins you will probably lose weight, but it comes back on easy. If you lose weight the right way, it will stay off.

what i would do concerning your diet

-cut out the fast food totally. Whataburger and Canes. Get off the sodas as well. Maybe have a diet soda once or twice a week with dinner to soothe cravings.

-lunch i would stick with a 6inch subway sandwich on wheat. Check their website for the best options. I lost some weight eating 6" turkey daily for a few months. It works. Cut out the mayo and leave off the cheese. Pile on the greens to fill you up; lettuce, spinach, jalepenos, bannana peppers, etc.

Dont buy the footlong and say you'll split it between meals; ive been there. I usually eat it all if it is in front of me stick with Baked Lays as chips, and drink water or some type of diet green tea. I've lost

-also for lunch, you can make turkey sandwiches at home and bring them with you. If you really need mayo, get a lite mayo. Ive been using a horseradish sauce in place of all mayo in my diet. or some type of spicy mustard.

-dinner keep eating the baked chicken. add some grilled veggies as a side. stay away from macaroni or mashed potatoes or whatever type of sides you sometimes see with that. Fish is good too. Even a hamburger, just the patty or maybe open faced on some type of wheat bread. Stay away from the red gravy. maybe once a week as a treat.

it's all mainly a mindset. one of my favorite quotes that i always try and remember, is "eat to live, do not live to eat". Just tell yourself you just need this food to satisfy your stomach. An hour after you eat, you won't care that you ate something healthy over some type of fattening food. You'll feel better about yourself at the very least.

your eating doesnt look to bad considering your weight

It has been for a long, long time. I changed what I was doing for the past month or so to try to stop the weight gain at minimum. I was eating fast food every day, sometimes twice because I am lazy and don't like to cook for just myself. I'm not a person to deny or act like I don't know what's wrong. I eat too much, move too little. But I have a problem with self-motivation, and any support from any place will help. A little bit of external support will go a long way.

I like the idea of starting with Atkins because I'll lose the initial weight fast, see results and that will really help stay motivated. I figure if I do some Atkins and lose 25-40 pounds on it, I will see/feel the difference and then can switch to a more traditional style and do some more exercise and eat properly.

That being said, I do know the formula for losing weight: eat less bad shite, move more. When I was younger, I lost 40 lbs in the summer between 8th and 9th grade, people barely recognized me. I have a good idea of how to lose the weight, but any help and tips are appreciated and hopefully if I'm ever feeling like giving up I can come to this thread for a little support.

I need a big boy scale for my home, any recommendations/pricing? Most home scales don't go over 300..

Most digital scales go way over 300 now. I think I got mine at walmart.

I seem to recall getting the cheapest one. Do not do this. My stupid scale somehow keep the previous days weight in memory and if there is not a big change, you get the same weight as the day before.

I figured this out about 2 months into the diet. Now I start the morning, weighing my leg, then getting the full weight.

Good luck. We are here for tips and for letting off steam.

Wow. I go away for a few hours and you guys write a weight loss manual without me.

Simple fact. Eat less, move more.

I am a huge proponent of Atkins. Well, not so huge anymore at 208.

I do however modify Atkins somewhat. I do watch my calories AND eat the atkins way.

You may be hungry for a few weeks, but your body will adjust. Doesn't mean there won't be times when you are hungry but it will actually pass.

My Keys To Success

1. No bad food in the house. NONE! Toss that shite out. Do not say, I will finish all of this, THEN start the diet.

2. Healthy snacks that you like but can keep from eating them all. I eat a string cheese stick taking small bites to prolong the satisfaction. I have also used wasabi peas and wasabi almonds, but I have a difficult time keeping portions controlled.

3.Come here to vent when hungry or pissed off. I have been doing it since the end of September and it helps a lot.

4.I weigh myself daily to see if things are working. If the scale isn't moving then you are eating too many calories.

5.KNOW EXACTLY OR DAMN NEAR IT, how many calories you are eating. I eat preformed burger patties so I know the exact calories count. When I eat chicken thighs, the number will be off a little from the packaging since some are a little bit bigger than others but it is pretty close.

6. It isn't easy. Even with Atkins the going will be tough. You know it but you can do it if you are ready.

7. Just like alcoholics need to take it a day at a time, we need to take it a day at a time. Don't think, oh shite how can I do this for 6 months or a year. Thoughts like that cause people to quit. Simply get through today trying to do your best.

8. Do not give up after a few bad days. For 30 years of dieting, I have always reached a point where I have a few bad days and I used that as an excuse to quit. In June or July I almost cracked. Hit Taco Bell 4 times in one week. I was about to make it 5 times and I said ENOUGH IS FRACKING ENOUGH! In the past I would have quit. This time, I brushed off those cheats and went back to work.

Once again, we are here to help and support you anyway we can.

End Thesis.

One more item.

9. Do not deprive yourself of all good food. I do go out about once a month. Also special occasions like T-Giving and Christmas, I eat every damn thing I wanted to eat. You can't line up at the buffet and go insane, but you also don't have to get the grilled chicken on lettuce with no seasoning, marinade or dressing.

This is a lifestyle change. When you have a bad meal, you make it up the rest of the week. That is what the damn scrawny thin bastards have always done. We just need to learn to do it too.

Oh, and ditto to the 14 pages of notes from Cad.

Hard to do with a skinny arse roommate around. The good news is he's trying to GAIN weight (working out) so he keeps tons of protein around, so we'll both be protein whores.. won't be so bad at first.

Yeah, I have a bad snacking habit. Going to have to learn to say no.

I hate counting calories.. another big adjustment that will have to be made lol. But I have a calorie counter on my phone, all I have to do is put in the numbers

Sound advice. I appreciate the help Myth.

I feel like I need to learn what my actual current weight is. I don't want to be some health nut, superbuff OT board kinda guy, but I want to be satisfied and happy with myself. I think if I could be in a Large or even 1X t-shirt, I'd be fairly happy with myself. That probably translates to ~100 pounds to lose though. I have to do this! I wish I was good with Photoshop, I'd take a picture of me and make it a not-so-fat me and put that shite up in my bathroom and put a current picture up next to it, that would be some motivation :P

Make sure you have a few BEFORE shots. I have almost zero pictures of me for the last few years as I didn't want to be seen at 323.

I have one shot from a wedding and I am not sure I wasn't pushing 350. I quit drinking for a whole year before I started the diet. I must have lost some weight over that year. Seeing that one picture and my driver's license really show show me how far I have come. Still have a ways to go followed by some fine tuning with the gym.

Thing is that after losing over 100 pounds the remaining weight really doesn't seem hard at all.

Once again, good luck. Come here often and vent when needed.

That feature is an abomination. I finally figured it was simply impossible to weigh exactly the same 3 or 4 days in a row so I looked the damn scale up online and LOTS of people were pissed about that damn feature.

Although it was interesting seeing those 2 and 3 pound drops when the damn scale would finally give me a drop.
