mystery bump probably due to actual exercise being done this week. OM sprints and dumbbells.

Ha! I was logging in to see if you had posted about the health benefits of coffee.

I was doing just fine yesterday. I had a salad for lunch and avoided the Wednesday Free Lunch which was various awesome looking poboys.

Then 2pm hit and the cookie monster portion of my brain took control and buried my head in leftover poboys!

My calories were probably still under 2,000 but..... a guestimated an insane 7,800 mgs of sodium yesterday when you toss in a butterball turkey burger for breakfast and 2 pieces of rotisserie chicken for dinner.

With that much sodium, I might gain weight today no matter what I eat.

I had a turkey burger for breakfast but that is the start of a Cadfast to get some of that sodium out and the carbs from the bread.

1 step forward and 15 backwards

I have no idea what caused this big bump. I didn't even work out yesterday. I think the culprit was the breakfast sausage links i had for breakfast.. that's about all it could be, nothing else I had was out of the norm.

Really haven't been "dieting". Just working out, doing 16/8 fasting 5 days and 2 days of 24 hours fasts. Still slowly losing weight. Biggest hinderence has been the weekend beer drinking.
Can't complain though. I'm in a little over 3 months, I think. My plan was to get to 225 before Oct.
Feel better and steady changing my body.
I get on the scale every day I work out, but I simply don't stress it. It shoots up 4-5 pds. then in 2 or 3 days, it goes back down.

weagle, do some research on low carb diet and possibly reversing your fatty liver. pretty interesting

Hulk, my 18 yr old son has been working out and he is trying to put on muscle mass. His diet is so-so and I have been trying to get him to eat better. He is not overweight. I have noticed that he is picking up size, but what post workout drink would be good? Whey? I think I saw somewhere that this should be consumed within 30 min of finishing the workout. He says he doesn't feel like eating anything after the workout so I was thinking a drink would work best.

beat me to it

DALLAS – Jan. 20, 2009 – People on low-carbohydrate diets are more dependent on the oxidation of fat in the liver for energy than those on a low-calorie diet, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found in a small clinical study.

The findings, published in the journal Hepatology, could have implications for treating obesity and related diseases such as diabetes, insulin resistance and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, said Dr. Jeffrey Browning, assistant professor in the UT Southwestern Advanced Imaging Research Center and of internal medicine at the medical center.

"Instead of looking at drugs to combat obesity and the diseases that stem from it, maybe optimizing diet can not only manage and treat these diseases, but also prevent them," said Dr. Browning, the study's lead author.

quote:

Dr. Browning and his colleagues will next study whether the changes that occur in liver metabolism as a result of carbohydrate restriction could help people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Previous research has shown a correlation between carbohydrate intake and NAFLD.

A protein shake is perfect after a workout, and yes common knowledge is that protein should be taken within 30 minutes of a workout, although not everyone feels the same way (there are always conflicting viewpoints)
If he's trying to pack on muscle, he needs a mass gainer. Those are going to be LOADED with carbs, but he will pack on mass. The side effect is that fat is gained with the muscle and every 6 months or so he will need to lean up to really look solid. Also he needs to clean up his diet.

my roommate uses this:

And he's packed on something like 40 pounds of muscle. I'm not an expert, but he should be consuming at least 3500-4000 calories per day (maybe more, all depends on his metabolism. My roommate has to consume about 6000 a day). Those mass gainers are PACKED with calories and carbs. Depending on which one you get. That re-built Mass has about 800 calories and 150g carbs per serving :lol.. but it's a supplement to help people trying to gain mass reach the caloric intake the need.

Do these studies say how much of a carb restriction is needed for that effect? I would say my daily carb intake is anywhere from 20-100 a day, sometimes I go over that but that's rare. I'm nowhere near atkins levels nor ketosis but I know that's lower than an average diet.

I'm reluctant to do low carb because of some of the restrictions involved but if it will help I'm open to it. A lot of the research I've done already says that simply improving your eating habits and losing weight will also reverse the effects. Even though according to your research it's not as effective as low carb.

I guess I'll make a decision after speaking to my doctor and seeing how serious this is. Apparently it's not that serious if he is waiting to talk about it at my June 1st appointment.

Thanks for doing that research on it for me guys.

i personally believe being in a ketogenic state (20 carbs or less a day) offer dramatic health benefits..especially over the long term.

just look what it does for epilepsy..virtually cures it in many many cases.

what is so unnatural about eating meats, cheese, a few vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc.? why is low carb made out to be a 'bogeyman'? (supposedly hard on your kidneys, etc etc) yet not a shred of evidence to back this up.

yet studies around simple sugars and carbs are starting to abound showing these are indeed the culprits of poor health in america.

in short, we are spoiled brats who love us some white rice, bread and candy..and we don't want to give that up.

the fact when i gave up fried foods and all that sugary crap my acid reflux went away almost overnight (i was popping omeprozole like it was going out of style!) alone is enough to convince me to stay away from that crap.

yes

low carb diet produced a great effect in the beginning but not in the long term. Weight loss seems to be the key. Scientists don't have the fatty liver quite figured out yet. Some studies have shown soluble fiber (metamucil) and coffee to be beneficial. Also decreasing fructose intake.

good idea.

How tall are you? Your numbers are similar to mine and Hulk's.

wobbly week heading into b-day weekend. The body is trying to figure out these OM sprints.

last year I blew up to plus six and it took almost a week to recover. I survived. I'm at a better point this year.

Therefore I'm going to have my cake and eat it too.

I'm six foot even. I know I'm shorter than Hulk by a good bit and for some reason I thought I remember you saying you were taller too.

Oh and my 245 goal is only a first stop, that was my high school playing weight. I just wanted to see it again and then go on past it. Ultimately I want to be around 190-205.
