A big part of it yes, I still have fundamental issue with the fat penalty.

For kicks, I looked up how much hidden valley ranch I could eat with my 40 daily points. It was 1 1/3 cups. Then I checked calorie king and that much ranch was 1400 calories...

I don't feel like its a fat "penalty" but the fact remains that a gram of fat has 9 calories, where grams of protein and carbohydrates only have 4 each.

192.7 when i woke up.

i skipped breakfast and met the race group at 730am for their training ride.

rode 60 miles from hell. i mean these guys tore me up completely. i had a 25 minute point where my power was around 300 watts...and my power FTP is 294 (or was) so that technically should have been impossible.

it totally wrecked me and at the end i didn't feel like i could ever put my legs over a bike again. i crawled (no lie) into my bathroom and curled up in the fetal position on the lienolium for about 30 minutes before i could stand up and get a shower.

anyway..i briefly saw 191.8 on the scales..but since then i've eaten 3 slices of pizza, a steak, 3 brats with olive salad and sour cream, a package of nuts, half a can of almonds and a low carb yogurt before i came out of my fit of insanity.

i'm still hungry lol. i guess the lesson here is to EAT before you go and burn 4000 calories and cough up a lung.

so i'm hoping not to see higher than 193.x tomorrow..but have another ride in the AM so maybe that will help me for monday's weigh-in.

Dude, I think it is time to up the calories a bit. You are a riding machine and need a few more calories.

I suggest chocolate cake.

Most people burnout and quit after a brief diet with too much exercise.

if you are going to burnout, you are going to burnout. Whether you are exercising and dieting or just doing one.

You either are going to do it, or never do it. Even if you lose weight by only dieting, then by the time you want to exercise and shape up, you will have lost so much muscle that you wont even get a chance to burn out. You'll find it hard to perform simply exercises and may not even continue.

"hey i lost 100 lbs and i look and feel great, who needs exercise".

quote:

I just think for people that need to lose a ton of weight that it is better for them to stick to the diet with light to zero exercise until they really get a strong head of steam behind them.

this is a built in excuse. just saying. you dont need a head of steam to walk.

if its already in your head that you will burn out, you'll never do it.

quote:

And yes, I will put my 25 years of diet failure doing it the way Lester wants us to do it up against the 131 pound loss with almost no exercise any day of the week.

again, you and CAD act like everyone is the same.

I dont want anyone to do anything, really. Just giving my input. I'll never say everyone losses weight the same.

your way is great, but anyone that knows anything about fitness with tell you exercising promotes healthy living and weight loss.

I am speaking as an athlete, ive always found it easier to mix in some exercise. I know not everyone is the same, and a lot of people dont like to move around.

3.888 grams of fat equals one point (or said another way 35 calories from fat is one point (3.888*9)

9.2 grams of carbs equals one point (or said another way 37 calories from carbs is one point (9.2*4) PLUS a possible reduction in point value based off fiber (not as much as original points but it is still there)

10.9 grams of protein equals one point (or said another way 44 calories from protein equals one point).

Original had 50 calories equals one point before adjusting for fiber and fat. This is why, as you observed, lean meat didnt change much if at all because the discount on protein was minimal (and this was WW observing the protein craze isnt really that crazy).

So the fat penalty is not as pronounced as under original points but by mathematical definition, it does exist still in point plus.

It is funny you mention ranch as that is the staple in the household. At 140 calories for 2 tsb, and that being 4 points... if my wife (5"10, 155 pounds..... yes she would REALLY appreciate it she knew I wrote that publicly ) used all of her 29 points on it... she would barely break a 1000 calories a day. That just seems a little light to me *shrug*

Again the pros outweigh the cons for us so I am not complaining too loud

LE, in some areas, yes..everyone is the same.

did u read the study ignoria posted? it summed up what i've been trying to say the last 2 pages alot better than i did. in a nutshell:

extended cardio (30 minutes+) has no measurable impact on weight loss. 15-30 minutes of HIIT or interval training is all you need to do.

more than that is a waste and can cause the OPPOSITE effect long term..encourage hunger (and the subsequent overeating that tends to follow), demotivation (who has an hour or more every day to do cardio long-term?), etc.

i ate like a pig yesterday because i physically broke my body down by averaging 170bpm heartrate for almost 4 hours (last time i measured it my lactate threshold was 167) and doing something my body was not designed to do. i couldn't stop myself..my body took over and it was almost akin to a sneeze..it wanted food..and lots of it. i'm absolutely sure i ate more than i exercised yesterday.

20-30 minutes of smart strength training is all anyone needs to do.

i'm putting myself through this torture because of a vain attempt to win a meaningless CAT-5 amateur bicycle race. i know this isn't necessary or even advisable for simply pure weightloss.

Oh, I know. Just never really felt like there was a penalty on fat (particularly since WW good health guidelines recommend 2 tsp at minimum a day) - so I wanted to get a full explanation of your thoughts. So, thanks!

Oh and I'm at a new low - 279.8/249.2/164. 30.6 total.

Still slow going - have 4 more weddings before the end of May. Hoping to maintain or have small losses throughout that time. But I do weigh-in on Saturdays and the weddings are mostly on Saturdays, so that gives me all week to recover from the drinking, sodium, and using all 49 weekly points.

forgot to weigh in.

257/194.8/185

myth

my abs have never been better defined and my 32x34 jeans are now sliding down my hips so i'm going to have to go down another size.

i'll take it. i definitely have a buttload more muscle this time around.

oh and i'm now up to 3.5 chinups. jesus these things suck. you wanna feel bad about yourself? try your skill at chinups. my end goal is to get to where i can do 10 pullups..but right now i can't even freaking do 5 chinups so i got a looong way to go on the pullups.

A pint of Haagen Daas and some oreos will give you the energy to do 20 chin ups.

You really crack me up. You always love to break out the core concept that not everyone is the same then you go on to spout off on how it should be done. Pot meet kettle.

323/189.9/185

Better hurry Cad, I am nearing the prize. Full sprint from here on out. No cheating opportunities in my sight.

we'll see. slow & steady wins the race. just because you're up by 5 right now doesn't mean you'll be up by 5 a week from today.

actually i'm a little concerned about the century this weekend..i'll be in chattanooga all weekend long and these things have a way of providing WAY too much food. its ironic i'm going to be doing possibly the toughest ride i've done all year to this point and i'm already worried about GAINING weight as a result. :\

6'1 240.0/227.8/199 since 04/04/11

i hit a low since the start yesterday at 227.4
i've had cake, champagne punch and other stuff at party today.
hopefully it was just a hello to carbs today and back on the no to very low carbs tomorrow.

If I start lifting weights again, will this slow my weight loss drop?
