Good idea

I wouldn't dip down below 1000 calories very often...

Yeah, I'm just doing it this week. I wouldn't have it I hadn't gotten off my plateau. I was varying it up quite a bit the last couple of weeks. If I don't lose any after today, tomorrow I'll raise the calories and see what happens over the weekend. But, my goal is Easter Sunday. After that, I'm going to take a more steady approach.

i cant help but feel partially responsible. i've talked 4 women where i work here into spending way more money than they wanted to on bikes..

we should rename this thread "atkins and bikes".

I doubt I'll ever end up getting a bike. I live on Jefferson in BR, really nowhere bike-friendly to ride for long distances. Then again, I'm guessing the distances you ride include crossing busy intersections and such? idk makes me nervous.

Jefferson Hwy is deadly...there are no real bike friendly areas in town....personally I'd just rather run & walk anyway.....

Yeah I'd have to drive out of town and stuff.. I'll pass I need to start swimming again now that it's a little warmer! I just don't like going by myself, especially when random people are there.

I like swim....however not as a form of exercise....I don't want to go to the gym and do 50 laps in the pool....

You don't really need to. According to MyFitnessPal, an hour of leisurely swimming burns like 900 calories. I just go into the pool and swim around, hang out, kick my legs and arms sometimes. It's way more fun to be with a friend.

Right. No one is suggesting trying to be Michael Felps. If you want I suppose you could swim a couple laps just to get the blood flow going but just hanging out in the pool will burn some calories.

Yep.

Michael Phelps would burn like 15-20k cals per day from swimming practice. Swimming is fantastic exercise. That's why when you swim for a while you get so hungry afterwards. I know after I swim for that 1 hour I could eat a facking horse.

And on Atkins, that wouldn't even be cheating.

You need to get your heart rate up in the 140-160 range to start burning fat rapidly

Not a believer in Fat burn heartrate zone (65%)?

What are peoples thoughts on that?

LINK

The body does burn a higher percentage of calories from fat in the 'fat burning zone' or at lower intensities. But, at higher intensities, you burn a greater number of overall calories which is what you should be concerned about when trying to lose weight. The chart below details the fat calories expended by a 130-pound woman during cardio exercise:

Low Intensity - 60-65% MHR High Intensity - 80-85% MHR
Total Calories expended per min. 4.86 6.86
Fat Calories expended per min. 2.43 2.7
Total Calories expended in 30 min. 146 206
Total Fat calories expended in 30 min. 73 82
Percentage of fat calories burned 50% 39.85%

So according to the article, you'll still burn overall more fat calories if you do intense workouts, but a smaller % of the calories burned are from fat.

Thanks, makes sense.

I am amazed at the amount of contradictory information/myths out there in the arena of diet and exercise.

It is remarkable
