A lot depends on the side dishes that will go with it.

Fries, potato salad, cole slaw.

To be safe, I'd figure 3/4 of a lb. per person. They will probably lose a little weight when frying due to moisture loss.

I know when figuring for boiled shrimp, the usual amount is 1 lb. per person with sides of corn, potatoes, mushrooms, sausage, etc. That 1 lb. of shrimp is probably about between 1/2 to 3/4 lb. once the shells are removed.

A 15# box of catfish filets can feed 30-40 people easy so 2-3 people per pound depending on sides etc.

Get a bunch of teenage boys involved and those numbers go out the window. They eat like damn vacuums, so keep the age of your guests in mind too.

Did the OP say teenage boys?? 3/4lb per normal person is overkill. I've fried for 30-50 adult men plenty of times and have never needed more than 15-20# of fish.

1/2 pound (3-4 pieces) each person is more than enough assuming sides and extras go with it.

Half pound per person is plenty with normal side dishes.

He also didn't specify there would NOT be any teenage boys in attendance. I too have cooked for large numbers of people at given times and know for sure young teens will throw off any proportional plans you may have.

And I've always adhered to the theory of having too much as opposed to too little. You can always stop frying when it looks like things are winding down.

1/3 pound would likely do it with typical sides. 1/2 pound of meat is the typical standard for things like steak. Fried food is more filling generally.

I feel dumb asking this, but do y'all buy the box of catfish like this below? Or just filets from the seafood department, Tony's, etc.?

I've only ever fried fish my dad has caught and given me, and I'd like to have it more often than that.

This. I always have plenty of leftovers if I do 1/2 lb per person and sides.

1/2 lb per person is PLENTY to feed and have leftovers. I am personally addicted to fried speckled trout and just don't like fried catfish all that much anymore. I mean I'll eat it, but trout is better. Hell bass and white trout also fry up better than catfish IMO.

In my house, 3lbs of fried fish feeds 4 people. This includes the standard sides we typically serve. Homemade black eyed peas, slaw and cornbread.
