I’m an old man and cook on a stick burner. Love tending that fire but thinking about a pellet pooper for days when I have other things to do. How are the Pit Boss cookers. Won’t be my primary pit but will get used. Thanks.

I have one and have been happy with it overall. I will say that it does tend to have quite large temperature swings. The temp on the digital readout will be relatively steady, but my probe at the grate will show some big swings. It always seems to start happening at like 1 am too

I had a masterbuilt which is similar to the pit boss and upgraded to a RecTec 590 and its night and day, all stainless steel, built like a tank. Very pleased. I ended up buying their bullseyes for quick cooks and searing as well.

The 590 does sear tho, I can get it to 600 degrees, just takes longer.

I'm probably going to sell my gas grill and get one for the house. Also going to pick up the small tabletop for my camper. Just super easy to set the temp and throw on the food

I have a pit boss and I’ve been a bit disappointed with it and reading this board it seems the rectec pellet grill is the best.

As another poster said the temperature swings are big. If you set it at 350 mine will swing between 320-420 degrees so I have to watch it. It works a lot better at lower temp levels which makes sense bc it is a smoker.

I have had two burnouts with it where the fire will go out and pump tons of dark smoke. It’s been a bit of a problem for me and maybe I should contact their support to see if maybe mine has a parts issue.

I was in the same boat as you. I purchased a pit boss XL1000 and for quick cooks I wasn't very happy with it. It was much better for low and slow than it was for searing/grilling after work. I sold it and purchased a Rec Teq B380 Bullseye and love it. I've done low and slow on it but it works great as a grill, it can be at 750 degrees in 15 minutes. I still have my stick burner and electric smoker for longer cooks but the Bullseye is great when I don't want to tend a fire.

ETA: I use the Bullseye 4 or 5 times a week for anything from ribs to meatballs to pizza to steak. Excellent. at $399 it fits your budget.

As others have stated I have a buddy with a rec tec and he swears by it. I have no experience with any kind of pellet grill but if I were in the market for one a rec tec would be on my list.

In that range you should also consider GMG. May need to stretch a bit but it'd be worth it.

ETA: removed the part that had to be a link to a fishing site

Search green mountain grills and go direct. My buddy couldn't believe it either and I'm trying to verify
