Pistachios. Is it worth it to get them still in the shell?

The economics of it makes no sense, but is there an advantage taste-wise?

Not IMO. Just more of a challenge to eat.

If you're drinking beer, get the ones in shells.

Bite them open, suck the salt, wash down with a pull.

The shell slows you down so the bag lasts longer.

I also appreciate the ASMR of the cracking sound of opening & subsequent clinking of the shell as it is deposited amongst the other spent casings.

This, plus the process of peeling them is cathartic. It's one if my anger coping mechanisms. Sometimes I don't even eat them right then but save them to eat later.

I think they taste better in shell, but I've been converted to the shelled Wonderful chili roasted pistachios.

From my experience, they taste fresher in the shell.

Sort of like sunflower seeds to me with half of the fun is getting them out of the shell.

I think the ones in the shells have more flavor, particularly the seasoned ones. I enjoy shelling them.

It's somewhat akin to eating boiled crawfish. I'd rather peel them myself, suck the heads etc... A handful of peeled boiled crawfish just isn't the same.

I like to eat them from the shell too but I keep a bag of shelled to use in pesto or a salad.

I grew up eating the red ones which you can’t find anymore. They were mostly from Iran. Most pistachios we are consuming now are American grown.

I once had a friend in high school that would get drunk on Friday nights after the football game and would sometimes eat pistachio nuts. A few times he got tired of taking them out the shells and started eating them shells and all.

I'd have hated to pass that then next day.

As for me, I love them in the shells, especially when they use to dye them that reddish color before the FDA said it wasn't safe.

I love the seasoned shell-on pistachios, too. Unshelled are great to add to ice cream!

I find that shelling them can be somewhat of a stress release. I love the salted black pepper version.

If I’m using them in a dish, I buy shelled.
