I guess the chain restaurants and my lack of culinary adventure are why PH went out of business? GTFO.

I will tell you one thing that letter did accomplish. I will never eat at another restaurant he opens. Good job there Chef

It did come across as a "thanks, but this is your fault you uncultured rubes" letter.

There was the "I'm doing this because I want to spend more time with out family" reason. No one buys that. The place didn't work out. It's a tough business. It happens. There's no shame in that, but don't sell us that line of bullshite.

Then the pretentious "people of BR, raise your culinary standards" line, as if THAT is the reason the place failed. No, if your place was good enough it wouldn't have failed.

I think the big issue is that it had an identity crisis in a crappy location. It seems like (at first) it wanted to be a cool neighborhood bar in a restaurant's skin and in a location without a neighborhood. When you walked in you couldn't quite figure out if it was bar or restaurant. Contrast it with the Bulldog which really leaves little doubt that it is a bar first. It's as if someone started a bar in a former Piccadilly.

As for its hopes in becoming a family-friendly restaurant, the location sucks. Nothing has worked in that area...even those "dirty chain" restaurants. The only "local" place that has really ever worked there is Mansur's, and that's because Mansur's had built up a reputation long before it moved to a freaking strip mall.

You never get any joy in seeing someone's dream and hard work fail. But just say "thanks" and "we'll try again." Be humble and appreciative to those who did support your business. Telling people essentially that you being to good for them is the reason YOU failed is condescending. Take some accountability. Learn some tough lessons and get better. But don't tell your potential future customers that it's your fricking fault we have to shut down.

Those places are packed every night because people know what they are getting when they go there. Those places are what they are and very rarely fluctuate in terms of quality of service, food and atmosphere.

As I said in the OT thread, Pelican House had no identity, none. Some nights it hosted art shows, other nights there were covers for live music, other nights it was a sports bar, other nights it felt like a club, etc... That along with the menu pretty much changing every couple weeks, you literally never knew what you were getting when you made plans to go there.

If I have to check the menu online or their online calendar every single time I want to go to ensure they aren't closed down for a party or are serving food I like, then I'm just going to go somewhere else.

Crazy how a place like PH will close but a shithole like Earl's remains open.

So-so drama happening on social media right now. tl;dr, people are (rightfully, IMO) calling out PH for being lackluster and taking parting shots. My favorite comment so far is a "defense" from Pelican House:

"Pelican House Baton Rouge Your comment was deleted not because we were offended, but because we would like to keep these comments positive. Please keep in mind that people are losing their jobs."

lol okay

Well, I guess they are doing SOMETHING right then. PH had no idea what it wanted to be when it grew up. I guess Earls does. Dunno

Then to top it all off, they had live body painting which consisted of a few Penthouse strippers entirely naked getting their bodies painted. One person said he had to convince his wife to go to a beer event (and assure her these events were a good time). Once they got there, she got to look straight at a stripper's vagina

This is the funniest story I have ever read on this board. Literally has me in tears laughing.

I'm sure he burned a couple of bridges with his comments. Who knows though? Maybe he is "edgy" now and will be sought after. I doubt it though.

I don’t think you can really compare Earls to PH

Why not? they both serve food and drinks and in PH's case buch better food and drinks. Although the price is higher. I guess pH should have take a page out of earls' playbook and not spent any money on repairs since BR patrons seems to like walking in, eating and drinking shite.

Sounds like you have an axe to grind with this place, considering you are the ONLY one to pull that rabbit right out of the hat. tsk tsk Life is too short to have hate in your heart.

Uncle Earls is a bar that has food. They aren't trying to be culinary geniuses. They also are within walking distance for everyone in southdowns, not hidden back in a hole next to the interstate.
