Not familiar with those, but I see they're $20/jar....kind of defeats the purpose of this budget friendly entree.

Nothing like impressing the in laws with a $16 jar of cherries. They'd think you were oil money.

eta.. the cheese has some kind of growth on it. I'm sure sore fresh grated velveeta would have put those puppies over the top.

It's Parmesan cheese. I threw that on top of the grated cheese (in a bowl) to give it a little added texture.

We always have that at family gatherings. I've never tried it. Knowing that it's mayonnaise, I will continue.

My grandmother served this for every holiday meal growing up and I always ate and would eat it today. The cheese added a salt component and the mayo sort of an acidic aspect. Those two ingredients countered the sweetness. I think we also had a cherry half, but it was sitting on lettuce leaf. No parm cheese. That would ruin it for me. If I'm going to eat it, I want it to taste just like hers!

I also liked the pineapple slice with the mayo and the cheese.

My grandmother made it too. I think she had walnuts on it though.

It is a good salad. A lot of the people in this thread that don't like it, who are usually pretty open minded about food, would probably like it.

You know...I had the misfortune of eating at Ryan's once and they had that shite available (it was cottage cheese instead of mayo though). I honestly thought it was a joke...but, here we are.

I too feel like we've had this thread.

That looks disgusting. We eat first with our eyes. Definitely not winning any awards for presentation.

But maybe it tastes good. I've eaten some pretty tasty yet visually displeasing meals. I think it's the ingredients that turn me off. We should do a Chopped challenge with pear, mayo, cheese, and cherries.

My mom made it. I ate it. Would eat now. And I don't eat canned fruit ice berg lettuce or mayo lol.

Is that because you're nostalgic, because you feel defensive of your generation's tastes, or because you actually think it tastes good?

given this statement I'd guess it's a combination of the first two

Mom made the pineapple cottage cheese crap, too. I scraped off the cottage cheese...can't eat that....always ate the rest. Great foods of the '60's and '70's.
