some of the prices are marked up but i never noticed that large of a mark up...but you also have to focus on the year of the wine
that can change the price a good bit

True life. There are noticeable differences between years. I never noticed it until I actually tasted them side-by-side.

Somewhere around $175 at a restaurant.
Steve Reynolds at Reynolds Family Winery in Napa is a friend of a friend so to speak and I used to get some good deals on wine for Christmas gifts. $1200 or so for 20-30 bottles of great wines. I really like their Perserverence and Serendipity cab blends. I don't remember the years, that mutual friend is the real wine expert.

White Perch, there is most definately a correlation between price and the grape. The consumer sets the price by creating demand.
Quality and price don't always move the same way, but with wine more often than not it does. Spirits on the other hand are more driven by marketing, especially vodkas.

$280 Caymus cabernet. It was good.

1K on a bottle of Harlan Estates. It was top notch, but not worth 1K. I've had numerous $90 bottles that were just as good.

We drink Silver Oak at my house like most folks drink Coca-Cola. My uncle just gave me two bottles of Krug Grand Cuvée to drink NYE.

Here's a LINK to an article in the inaugural Journal of Wine Economics. It is one of several you can find from reputable resources that prove, more often than not, people pay for perceived quality, not actual quality. I'm not saying you can't tell the difference, but 95% of people can't.

I've never spent more than 20 bucks for a bottle of wine. Can't tell good wine from bad wine. I can't stand white wines. I like red. Cab Sav. Often got in arguments about chilling red but I like it colder than room temp. Call me a Philistine. I don't care.

Most I've personally spent was $350 retail on a schrader RBS 2006 Cabernet. I've drank more than I can fathom on somebody else's bill. 1982 chateau Margaux, 1989 lafite Rothschild, 1961 latour, dom oenetheque 1990, krug vintage brut, I could keep going.

And got a bottle of this as a bday/Xmas gift a couple days ago. Gonna let this one sit a decade or so.
