Okra in gumbo?--yes or no?

I say yes.
Gombo is actually a West African word for okra and that is where the dish originated, as the slaves brought the tradition with them.
And the flavor and texture are just not the same without it....the result may be good, but it's not really gumbo.
So there.

I like a moderate amount - I've had gumbos that had way too much okra.

To me, Okra takes gumbo up another notch.
I love gumbo regardless but really love it with Okra.

Okra is only good if it is done right. Have to fry it down so it isn't slimy!

You don't have to eat the okra, but it has to be in there for the gumbo to have the right consistency imo.

I like okra, but NOT IN MY GUMBO. If I'm eating in a restaurant, my first question is whether the gumbo contains okra. I don't like the texture, the flavor or anything about okra in gumbo. AND, okra is NOT necessary to get the "right" texture for gumbo is you know how to make gumbo. Of course, the "right" texture is also a matter of opinion.
And, while we're at it, I don't like tomatoes in gumbo either. I'm just not a fan of creole gumbos.
And, DO NOT mixture seafoods with meats in gumbo, for crying out loud. Just murders the flavor of the seafood, in MY opinion. What a waste.
I'm a very opinionated gumbo cooker and eater as you can tell, but most people are...

+1; those three rules perfectly capture my feelings on gumbo.
