What is wrong with Velvet Cactus?
Posted on 1/18/24 at 9:28 am to Roy Curado
Aside from the fact that Tex Mex isn't something that Louisiana does well at all, Velvet Cactus is just terrible food by any measure, no matter the type of cuisine.

It makes LaFonda in Lafayette look like Pujol.

N7 is excellent and different for area, but a little pricey (but no more than Cochon)

Ive had excellent Tex Mex in Louisiana. You do know cultures are not bound by boundaries?

Brigstens and Toups were my first 2 thoughts. I also love Clancy’s but may be a little more upscale than what the OP wants.
Also Velvet cactus? Wtf

Dude...no one is taking out of towners to a Tex Mex restaurant in fricking New Orleans.

Cafe Degas was a great suggestion. Nice little area over there.

Drinks at Swirl then dinner at Cafe Degas or Lola is always a popular combo. Sit under the oaks of Esplanade Ave.

I've heard good things about Pigeon and Whale, but haven't been yet.
Gris Gris is fantastic. Great gumbo, great everything.
Apolline is solid southern/New Orleans
Avo is pretty tasty for Italian, and pretty cozy.
Jacques-Imo's is a staple. Most likely a wait, but the bar area is nice to hang out in. check out Maple Leaf or Carrollton Station after if bands are playing, though if you're going Sunday, Carrollton usually only has songwriter night on the 3rd Sunday and nothing else the rest of the month.

Velvet cactus is not excellent Tex mex. Or good Tex mex. Or even mediocre Tex mex. I think their clientele is exclusively nurses looking to get obliterated on margaritas after their shift at EJ.

Clancy's would be my choice...

Last time I went, it was filled with an older crowd and many families. No nurses.
