Looking for ideas for New Year's Day meal other than roast, black-eyed peas, greens and cornbread.

We've tried them for years...we are over that superstition. Does anyone have any other tradition ideas? Now that we have a son, thinking of other ideas to start building our own traditions....

Just opening the door to opinions and ideas.

Well my friend...ponce/chaudin or any other Cajun dish would be a WONDERFUL idea....but there's a problem. I live DEEP behind enemy lines up here in a cultural desert called North Alabama.

Bone in pork loin with creamed spinach and sweet potatoes, mashed, gratin or some other prep. I'd still have to have a bit of black eyed peas, though. I think you can count the spinach as greens.

I'd bet some of the Cajun specialty shops will ship even to your desert.

Well you must’ve had peas last New Years because you’re in luck. You can have all the authentic Coonass food you want shipped right to your door.

Mr. Balls, your response was much more clever than mine.

Every year I make corned beef, black eyed peas, and smothered cabbage; and I never know why I only make it once a year. I love it.

I hate the OP is giving up the peas and cabbage tradition. It’s a great meal and New Year’s Day is a good reminder to eat it and acknowledge that it’s great meal. So what if it can’t ward off global pandemics and communism.

Sometimes our black-eyes are in Hoppin John with a side of cornbread.

Pork is a good luck ingredient. How about pulled pork with coleslaw. Black-eyes in a relish type dish like Texas Caviar.

Tradition in N.O. is black eye peas, smothered cabbage and I usually cook a slab of corned beef to go with the cabbage.

It's kind of a nice easy day in the kitchen after Thanksgiving and Christmas meals usually being kind of big and varied---------especially if hard partying took place on New Year's Eve.

No other ideas. I have the same thing every New Year's Day while I am watching the bowl games - corned beef, cabbage and black eyed peas. Black eyed peas for good luck, cabbage for money. It hasn't worked yet. but I keep trying.

I can't do it, though I have mustard greens rather than cabbage most of the time. Pork, greens, peas and cornbread are must haves for me.

I've smoked a Boston butt for pulled pork tacos topped with a slaw, and a black eye pea salsa

Checks all the NY day necessities but with a different flare.

I try to keep with the tradition of pork, peas, greens, but I like to try something different each year to keep it fresh.

Last year we did fried pork chops smothered in milk gravy, collard greens, field peas (I hate black-eyed and I can't find purple hull up here) and cheddar-jalapeno cornbread.

I've also tossed around the idea of making cabbage rolls, stuffed with a pork-rice dressing. My dude doesn't love cabbage so I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet, but I want to make it someday.
