The new Whataburger will be where the old Murrell's diner was.

no...

not really sure why this needed a thread

although I am somewhat happy since it is right by my house, so I have a new quick breakfast option nearby

Not at all... but since this location has been established in the middle of a heavily frequented bar scene, we expect it to be one of the highest grossing Whataburgers in the country.

Sure wish the one in Houma would still be open.

That's what I thought. Was under the impression every Texas city had a Whataburger.

I don't do burgers. But I remember the old Murrell's fondly. Back around late 70s. Coffee, grits, scrambled egg, bacon, biscuit. All for less than 2 bucks.

They opened one in monroe before Christmas. It's nothing special to me. The burger and fries taste just like sonic.

Oh indeed.

Murrell's will be missed. They still have one down Barksdale Hwy on the way to Lake Bistineau.

Do you remember George's Grill near Centenary? I walked in there to study for exams at midnight. The dorm was too noisy. I had no money. The old German waitress had pity on me and allowed me to stay as long as I bought a piece of toast and coffee for 50 cents.

I don't remember her name but I recall that she was from a town called Stuttgard. She is long dead. But her kindness is remembered today in this post.

I had many late night semi-drunken meals at George's back in the day. Some kind of grilled sandwich involving bacon....

George's is still open- the old man died about a year ago, but his daughter took over. She's apparently made some changes to the menu and to the inside, which has made some people happy and others not so happy, but it looks like she still does OK business.

Murrell's was great back in the day, but I remember going there when I was in high school/early college (around 2000), and the food sucked and the place was NASTY! It was an institution, but it was time to move on.

All my memories about Murrell's were also dismal. I think my last time there was junior year homecoming when one of the people at our table kept drunkenly throwing his silverware on the floor and wanted to fight everyone there. Good times.
