Including laying off about 20% of workers--most in Greenwood, MS. Also closing cooking schools in Ridgeland and Memphis.

I surprised it hadn't happened sooner.

I knew Fred Carl 20 years ago when they were in the old building south of downtown, close to highway 82. The company came a long way in the right direction in those years.
Fred was a good guy. Hate to see what the decline in economy did to them (plus the explosive growth in high end stove competition).
I remember when Jane Fonda and Ted Turner came to Greenwood to buy a Forest Green Viking Stove. I think Henry Kissinger came to town about the same time to select his stove.
"The new company owners will increase sales and profits."
This translates into a cheap stove with lower quality than the old models.
So much for growth under Fred Carl.
I guess he did OK for an Old House Contractor.

Well, Fred and the other shareholders got $380 million, so they're not worried if the company goes to shite.
New owners will send the manufacturing to China or Mexico.

For a long time Fred really cared about Greenwood and the employees. I think it ran away from him.
It was his hard work that made the company what it was. He deserves whatever he got in the sale.
I know companies must make profits, but I hate to ship work out of the country to make a buck. And I hate to see Viking ranges get cheapened.
You know from my posts that we don't have one.

do you know how many Viking ranges and complete kitchen sets there are in the homes of people that eat out 7 nights a week around here ? it is baffling .. I actually saw an oven in a house we worked on that had a tag still hanging in it ... and the house was over 2 years old ..
eta: and unless it is my imagination, you never hear a thing about the Viking cooking school that we had here in BR anymore either ..

I've got a six burner Viking range with a 24" griddle and two gas convection ovens. Eleven years old.
I would not buy another.
I have a 52" Viking natural gas built in stainless grill.
I would not buy another.
They never really made a great residential product. Commercial absolutely but mine have been trouble from the get go and all I know who has them have the same problems. The grill immediately lost the igniters and it had completely rusted out. The cooktop is hard to clean and the ignition has always gone out. The ovens broiler and convection have been worked on at least a dozen times.
Speaking of ovens with the tag on it, my neighbor hides hiss wife's Christmas presents in her ovens.

My parents have a Viking Cooktop and the damn igniters click constantly. No one has been able to repair them. Would have driven me to the nut house long ago.

Very similar to what I do with my wife's Christmas presents. I hide them in the vacuum / broom closet.

I'd hope not. All of their competitors still make them in the US. While I was at UL that was one of my product lines I investigated. Outside of the oven element shape and the gas burner design they are all pretty much the same.

I know several like that.
We've got a Viking range, fridge, etc and at this point have not had any problems. They're only 2.5 years old so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
