Trump’s wall must be working. Lack of Tex Mex restaurant operators from south of the border. Guess the Vietnamese will control both the donut and Tex Mex market in the near future.

To be fair, I’m willing to bet the owners and operators of Tsunami have names closer to “James Smith” than “some Japanese name”

Tamales! Since we kind of invented the whole Tex-Mex thing, I've never heard of tamales being a best entree in a legitimate Tex-Mex restaurant. They may be on the menu but no one is usually eating them. Tamales are reserved for the places which specialize in them (i.e. only sale that item) or those areas on the side of the road where madre/tia park during the holidays which have a loyal following.

Why is this so funny? There are ZERO good spots in BR that serve even decent tamales. Will definitely check this place out.

ETA: Why tf you reading the Advocate articles about local restaurants? I bet you are a regular at Papadeauxs

Why would someone open up a Mexican restaurant that has 2 within .3 miles that have been opened and seem to be doing well for several years now. That’s not counting going down coursey towards Jones creek with there are 2 more within a mile or so. Is there that much of a need for more Mexican food?

The Vietnamese angle is interesting, but the El Paso place owners are the Albasha folks. That being said, they obviously know how the restaurant business works.

Why open there? How does a bank lend them money for that knowing there are 2 established joints so close? i can’t imagine the lease there is cheap, it’s a brand new building.

I have a pretty good feeling that building is going to be the next rotating restaurant death bed. It’s going to compete with the old Calendars building and the building on Sherwood going towards the interstate that has had at minimum 4 restaurants in it over the last 1.5 yrs. I think it was a “boiling” joint last.

I don’t know who leases that one, but that person is good at what they do. Sir, don’t worry that know one has made it here in the last 5 yrs.... sure they only average around 3-6 months before closing.... you sir... you are different.

Being so close to us, I figured BR would have a few Mexicans who knew what they were doing in a restaurant.

And i bet you love to go to that "cajun" restaurant down the street that has some killer creole popcorn shrimp...

stick to your wannabe Gordon day job and post less

getting tamales right is pretty hard.

No kidding. Too much masa. Too little masa. Not steamed properly. Filling sucks. Sauce sucks.

I've never had REALLY good tamales that didn't come from an outdoor or roadside cart of questionable background staffed by older ladies of unquestionable background.

Now I want tamales for lunch.

Best tamales I ever had was from my Uncle's (who lived in Dallas) Hispanic house keeper who made us a huge batch one Thanksgiving years ago. She also sent some homemade sauce which was also some of the best I have ever had. Been chasing the dragon ever since.

I could be wrong but i think the Albasha folks own Los Reyes not El Paso. In my opinion, both are pretty good. I can't see this Queso place lasting a year.

We went tonight solely because of this thread. Service was great although the place was not very crowded.

Decent chips and salsa, queso was underwhelming, tamales were dry but proportioned correctly. All the sauces on our enchiladas were somewhat bland but not terrible. We would probably choose both Casa La Vida (our go to) & Los Reyes over it in the future.
