I’ve always felt like French fries are mostly mailed-in in New Orleans.

Not sure why that is, but average prevails.

Meanwhile, there are tons of outstanding onion ring options. That seems to be the calling card in the crescent city.

Anyone know the genesis of this? Or am I totally off here.

Onion ring starter is a staple at places like Casementos, Jack Dempsey's, R&O's, Charlie's, etc

You are correct. All the old school local restaurants have onion rings. Usually big ones, not thin ones.

Interesting take. Usually too expensive of an app and too filling for empty calories…but if offered with an interesting sauce I’m in. If you ever come to BSL, Trapani’s does an amazing pile of them. Haven’t had better.

Can't stand the shoe string onion rings... R&O does that.. The best I have had is right next door to R&O.. Is it New Orleans seafood and sprits? They are addicting there....

Yep

The Trinity is important - so why not fry it?

I know Frankie and Johnny’s does fried bell peppers.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone try to fry celery, though.

Agreed, except at Arnaud’s. Their puffed potatoes are the best french fries (sort of) you’ll ever have. They are perfection.

The best onion rings I ever had were at the LSU football game at Alabama in 2003. They were the thick kind and were nice and sweet. I'm sure they must have been frozen and I regret I didn't find out the brand.

I have also wondered how the onion rings are that they sell at Sam's (the frozen ones in the 10 lb box) . Anybody ever try those?

The Galley Seafood on Old Metairie Road has some of the best onion rings in town. They’re of the thick variety.
