Watched The Netflix Street Food USA series and there’s a NOLA episode. Never heard or been to Frady’s One Stop, I had to google it and it’s in the Bywater area, anyone been to it?

If you’re in the area and looking for a bite, sure. Nothing worth driving across town for.

If you’re in the neighborhood, it’s pretty good. The Roast Beef is my go to.

Watched this and then smartly re-watched Bourdain’s The Layover to remember how good things used to be in NOLA.

Frady’s is a great corner store with good poboys. Hansen’s is a great place to spend $7 on a snoball when you can get one in Harahan for $1.50.

McNulty has his thumb on the pulse of the city as well as anyone, but that was a lot of Ms. Linda’s yakamein and lacking other spots.

No mention of anything in the CBD, mid-city, westbank, etc.

Street food should also be represented by successes like Zee’s Pizzeria and places like Gonzo’s Smokehouse.

That was a lazy portrayal of street food in New Orleans.

In a nutshell, I thought the types of food they used to represent street food from New Orleans were fair. But, I didn't think the places that they chose to represent the street foods were the best choices. We've had many debates about the best Po-Boy in NOLA and I don't recall Fradys being in the debate.

Lived for several years within blocks of Frady's. Cheap breakfast plates (one called the grumpy old man special) and inexpensive po-boys. In the late afternnon, bunch of older guys are always sitting under the overhang nursing beers. Shrimp and oyster po-boys are very good, but they used to have odd hours (closed at 6pm even pre-pandemic). Original owner still lives across the street from it - his son runs it now.

Nola has a HORRIBLE street food scene because of regulating. We only allow lucky dog carts for one. So we don't get the vendor variety you see in other cities.
Then they have stupid food truck rules. So most street food is illegally done and you just have to know about it. Ms Linda maybe just got a permit. She used to sell out her truck.

Hansen's is good. But I don't really see a huge difference in snowball quality anymore.

Haven't seen the episode but decided to try this place since was in the Bywater and hungry with a half hour to kill.

It's a tiny place. They have a unique system. Whoever you order from goes and makes your food. When you see them again they have your food. I never seen that system before. Usually it's call outs. I guess it's similar to Domilise.
The roast beef was a good deal for under $10. It's a good flavor and make sure you get extra napkins.

Awesome thanks for the scouting report.
I’ll have to check it out. I always try and support local family owned businesses. The pics look great!

Just finished it. Was pretty underwhelming. Crawfish as “street food”? Yeah, okay. Oh, and poboys. How original.

I’m looking forward to the other episodes.

Honestly didn’t need 80% of the show dedicated to yakamein.

Not sure what y’all expected. Most don’t think of crawfish as street food, but most crawfish in Nola is done as a pop up in a boiling trailer setup - can kind of see it as street food in that regard. Poboys and Yakamein make sense as feature items plus Ms Linda has a good story, which is always an important part of the featured food in this series.

Really don’t know what other items they could have done. Beignets? Meh. Lucky Dog? Gross. Pizza? Not really special. Tacos? Not uniquely New Orleans. Maybe muffalettas, but Central Grocery has been closed since Ida. Maybe some Jazzfest vendors like Crawfish Monica or Crawfish Bread, but those guys typically only sell at Jazzfest and rarely do pop ups anywhere.

I thought the episode was fine overall.

First time I had Mrs Linda's yakamein was at a food festival in San Francisco we randomly walked by.

The unending attempt to try and elevate this shite to the Pantheon of New Orleans cuisine is one of the stupidest things ever.

We don’t need food trucks here. They aren’t doing anything better than what you can get that’s already here.

Just something different other than the same foods we see every time there's a show about New Orleans. I'm not going to claim to be some New Orleans food expert, but there has to be better "street food" options than what they showed. At least the yakamein was indeed a street food and is very authentic New Orleans but everything else was just a let down. I guess the truth is New Orleans doesn't have a street food scene.

I don't think anyone sees it as a street food and most is done in someone's backyard. It's the quintessential celebration meal in Louisiana.

The best snowballs are the ones closest to you.

I went to that Hansens one about 10 years ago, and its no better than any other. Same with Plum street.
