Staying in the southwest corner of Austin, TX this weekend. Looking for BBQ, Mexican, and some local brew. Willing to drive a ways, if necessary. Not enough time for Franklin BBQ. I can't wait four hours for a lunch on this trip. Whatcha got?

We really liked Terry Blacks for bbq.

Terry Blacks is great.
Valentinas is good, but you may wait 30 min.
Stiles Switch is good and they have lots of seating.

Mexican
Curra's Grill

You can order ahead for Franklin's online now and just show up at the designated time.

Well worth a little ride to The Salt Lick BBQ, it’s also BYOB!

Salt Lick's actual BBQ fails in comparison to some of the joints in Austin but it's a really cool experience out there.

Terry Blacks
Micklethwait Craft Meats
La Barbecue
Stiles Switch
Valentina's
Kerlin

Terry Black's and LA BBQ are great. Mickelwaith's was underwhelming.

I've had it twice and it was so salty both times I had it that I didn't like it. As in the meat just tasted like salt, not smokey barebqued meat.

Valentinas by far is my favorite BBQ in Austin. The 30 minute wait is worth it.

As far as breweries, there's no topping Jester King.

If you're in the mood for a BBQ sandwich or BBQ nachos, hit up Slab BBQ. There's one down south.

If you decide to head out to Jester King, also consider visiting Treaty Oak distillery.

Thanks to all who responded. That's a nice list to pick from. I went to Salt Lick on the last visit to Austin. I thought a few items were really good and a few were just average. It is a really great environment to hang out and eat, though. I will report back next week.

No way I could go to Austin and not go to Leroy and Lewis. For non-traditional BBQ and a fun spin on things check out CM Smokehouse. Interstellar, Distant Relatives, JNL Barbecue are all worth checking out.

From the SW part of Austin, welcome!

Most people’s BBQ recommendations have been spot on. Pick which day you want the food and check Franklins website to see if it’s available that day still. You just drive up and they bring it out to your car, it couldn’t be easier. If not, Terry Blacks is the move. La BBQ and Micklethwait are pretty far from where you’re staying and not worth the trip over either Franklins or Terry Blacks.

Jester King is out that way and fantastic. I’d also recommend ABGB - which should have live music and pizza. I think St. Elmo has one of the best food trucks in the city (Spicy Boys), the beer is good, but the atmosphere is fairly plain.

A lot of other breweries are going to be closer to downtown/east side.

For Mexican, Matt’s El Rancho is an Austin institution. It gets VERY crowded though. Polvos would be good as well. I feel Mexican food to be a bit lacking on the west side. Cruzteca is a solid choice in the area with good margaritas. Most of the best food is coming out of taco trucks.

Jack Allen’s is a solid comfort food choice down here that puts out great food.
