the WM Neighborhood Market is supposed to be at least slightly more upscale, and you'd think they'd have better QC on their produce.

Whole Foods produce is awful.
Don't think I have ever heard anyone complain about the quality of their produce.

Well, to be fair, it's not like Walmart has been around long enough for you to know such things.

Fruit flies. Every. Single. Time.
Maybe I've been in the grocery biz too long, but it just bugs (SWIDT) me when people complain about this.
Of course my comment is out of the window if the place is swarming with them. Other than that, I expect to see a few, depending on the season.
As for produce I get mine at WF, select stuff at trader joes and the farmers market for the most part.
nastiest is definitely Walmart for me - but I haven't been in to see in a while. You can find some gross sights at albertsons too

It's sub-albertson's level in BR. At least I've had a couple bad experiences.

got some rotten shallots and some bad asparagus.
I understand that with produce it's "buyer beware," but I just expect better when I shop at Whole Foods because of what they charge.
I think their meat is by far the best in town also.

How do you get bad asparagus without noticing it when you buy it?

I mean I don't disagree that I probably should have noticed before I bought it, but my issue with them is that with what they charge they should have only high quality produce, and that's not the case. You're basically paying boutique prices for Albertsons level produce when you shop at Whole Foods. And I like Whole Foods. I just don't like their produce section.

I can see getting a shallot that may be brown inside so that you couldn't tell it was bad. That happens to me once in a while at various stores with onions and shallots, but I inspect what I buy before I buy it.
Sometimes, I see asparagus with a few moist tips in various stores, but the rest are fine. They don't all go bad at the same time.
I see the folks at Whole Foods fooling with and replacing produce pretty often, though I've felt some pretty soft tomatoes from time to time, usually the heirlooms. Otherwise, the produce looks great. The greens especially always look good. I like the selection there, as well.
I think I'd start laughing if I went to a store the asparagus was put out tops down in water. That's funny..

I hate to knock it, but the Calandros on Government st has the worst produce. I don't do my regular shopping there, but always run in to grab stuff because I live nearby. Their stuff looks rough all the time

CSB coming from me
A few years ago when I was finishing up my Supply Chain Mgmt Degree at SELU, we took a tour of the Walmart distribution center in Robert, LA. HOLY shite thats the biggest building/warehouse I've ever seen in my life, and it was only the food. Well, They have brought us into what they called the "ripening room" which was full of nothing but bananas. Keep in mind that this room was probably as big as a HS gym. The manager told us that Walmarts quickest turnaround of all products is in fact, bananas

You should post your shopping schedule so everyone can get in before you. I dont want to see you putting back tomatos after finger blasting them.
Let me know when you can meet me and I'll be sure to sneeze in my hand before I touch your tomatos. Or maybe punch the clown and not wash my hands.
Do you really think my hands are any worse than that Hispanic that picked it?
Grow your own fruit if you are going to be a germaphobe.

The nastiest here in Louisville? Probably a couple of the Walmarts here in some hoodtastic areas where there's little to no turnover in the produce section. Even if it's a Kroger in a shitty area they tend to still move their produce in and out. It won't be the best you've ever had but it's still decent by supermarket standards.
I'm really lucky that I like right around the corner from a local company that is basically a year-round produce shop. They have a Boar's Head deli, carry local produce from around the state as well as Southern Indiana (they get a lot of produce from the Amish families in the area), and in the winter carry seasonal as well sell Christmas trees/fruit baskets. And then through fall we have several local farmer's markets too.
Honestly, I wish more people supported local growers. You really can't beat good, local, seasonal produce.

I know it's not produce, but that seafood counter at Albertsons in Baton Rouge is just downright nasty. There shouldn't be a fishy smell over 100 feet away.
I bought some king crab there once and after steaming them, broke one open and there were black veins running through the meat, which I've never seen before. They wreaked of nasty bleach smell too, so it never even hit my mouth. I went back to tell the seafood manager about them, because I could see in their case the black through the shells in the ones I didn't buy. Went back a few days later and they were still up for sale. I understand that there may be some bad product sometimes, but for the manager to not even listen to me and not check into the situation was inexcusable. On another trip I picked up a sack of live mussels. The person behind the counter wrapped them tightly in a plastic bag and tied off the end. I was like dude, these are live and need to breathe which is why they're sold in netting. I got a blank stare. Got them home, and apparently he wasn't the only one who mishandled them. When they opened up during steaming they emitted the nastiest smell ever. The wife went running out of the house with dry heaves. I never did go back.

Albertsons smells like old seafood throughout the store. I agree. Gross
