For all the good food that Nor-Jo's sells, I think their Muff is mediocre at best.

I could not agree anymore. I had been wanting a good muff and heard all about Nor-Jos. I had some business to do in the city and decided I would go out of my way to try one out. Big disappointment, way to much bread and not enough meat. I ended up chunking the bottom part of the loaf and eating it kind of like a slice of pizza. That was my last time there for a muff.

quote:I don't know about "best" cause I haven't had them all. I like DiMartino's very much and of course, Central grocery. Parran's used to have a good one, but they've changed hands since I last had one there. Liuzza's has a poboy version called a "Frenchuletta".

I haven't had a Nor-Jos muffaletta in years, but I remember enjoying it.
+10 years ago they had a fantastic antipasto salad. Chunks of salami, mozzarella, stuffed peppers, olives, and more. I primarily used it in pastas or as a topping like a brushetta. They stopped making it, but the article says they've been expanding products so maybe it'll return.

How recent was this? They are under new ownership and management as of about 10 months ago. I had one about two weeks ago and it was pretty darn good!

Agree with cajunate on this one. I had one about 6 months ago and it was very good.

Is Central Grocery now the ONLY place that doesn't heat them up as a matter of course?

Nor Joe asks you if you want it warmed or not. I picked mine up in the afternoon, went to mass and when I got home I put it in the oven just long enough to slightly warm the crust of the bread.
A full blown warmed muffaletta turns into an oily salty mess.

As for a muffuletta heated so much that the meat and cheese is warm, that is an abomination. The fat in them turns to oil and messes up the taste and texture. They're called cold cuts for a reason - no serving any warmer than room temperature. A quick crisp up of the bread is OK, but don't go beyond that.
If you're going to heat them, don't heat them open-faced. Heat them. assembled, so that it's the bread that gets heated and crusty.

Its probably been a year. If i'm in the neighborhood i'll give them another shot, not going to seek them out like I did last time.

I disagree. They should be pressed with the meat warm and the cheese melty, like how Anthony's does it. There's is among the best.

Yeah I like a hot, crispy MF.

Cochon Butcher is really good. World Deli in Metairie has a solid muffaletta as well.
