And it finally happened. Went to Mr. B's last night and was underwhelmed. We sat at 5:30 didn't get out till 650. Service was slow and indifferent. Poured my own wine gumbo was lukewarm. Desserts never offered. Waiter was not very attentive or well spoken. Entrées were fantastic though.

I didn't think this could ever at one of my go to restaurants in New Orleans. Has anyone else had any issues lately?

sounds like maybe you just had a bad server, it happens. I still consider Mr. B's a good french quarter spot.

How long were you looking to spend at dinner?

That's not an unusually long time to sit for dinner at a restaurant like Mr. B's. I've poured my own wine at numerous places. You said the food was good, so I'm really not getting the basis for the complaint.

That's not long for a dinner time meal there. Faster than I've ever eaten at dinner there.

What were your entrees? Did you have any apps?

You can ask for the dessert menu if you want dessert.

WTF. My wife and I can spend 2 hours easy at a nice place and be fine, and that's with an infant. Before the baby, we would spend 3 hours drinking, talking, and eating.

indifferent service is a killer for me
but only as to whether or not I go back often
it's not enough to bitch about especially if the food is good

Good god, maybe I'm a little ADD but holy shite. If I had to sit at a restaurant for 3 hours, I'd blow my brains out, even if it was with the most interesting person in the world.

I take it you wouldn't mind pouring your own wine.

The portions were very small for what you pay. The food was good.

anyone who spends 3 hours at dinner needs other things to do

I like Mr. B's. We hardly ever spend less than 2 hours in a good restaurant.

Every place in NoLa is having serious staffing issues lately. Over saturation of places making it difficult to get quality people.

First of all, my intent wasn't to bash B's. It was to share my experience. My observations come from an experienced eye as I have many years of experience in the business. I find it interesting that some of you think it is mandatory to dine for a long time or that it is no big deal to grab the bottle of wine for yourself. Both of these things seem trivial but should have been part of the service experience. In fact, these things should be the small things that should happen naturally without thinking in an establishment like that. Not offering the dessert menu is another thing that just shouldn't happen at B's. This is part of their DNA.

Interesting about the observation in the service industry. I thought that myself. How many new places have popped up over the past few years and that has to take a toll on quality staff. I also think that the expectation of getting 20% gratuity no matter what the level of service is causing the profession to become watered down. I hope they the art of fine table service will be present for my next visit. One bad trip won't keep me away.

Thanks for listening.

All good points but did you bother bringing up your service problems with the manager?

I like to pour my own wine, my wife (no pics) drinks less than me and normally leaves a ton in her glass when we leave.

Yes but I wasn't that upset. He had bigger fish to fry with the cheese ball in the black adidas jumsuit arguing for a table. Reminded me of Ben Affleck in Goodwill Hunting.

I like to drink wine fast too. No trouble pouring myself but they should have offered.

You were in and out of a higher end, perhaps fine dining, restaurant in <1.5 hours. I'm curious what your expectations are to consider this a criticism of a place where you said the food was fantastic? Do you think it is a possibility that the service was actually so good that they recognized the kind of customer you are and gave you the kind of service they thought you wanted? Who wants to pay a premium to get in, get fed, and get out as quickly as possible? Like most people here, I'm trying to find why you took the time to make a post complaining about an otherwise "fantastic" meal?
