re: Michelin Guide is finally coming to New Orleans, the South. “Michelin American South”

I thought it was an incredible visit, but I'll say their whole schtick is taking tried and true classics and presenting them in a way that is Michelin-esq, aesthetically.
They're doing impressive stuff, but if you're a local, the items and ingredients themselves will taste familiar and not necessarily jump out as unique. It's all in the presentation/preparation.
And if they are in fact doing all of this with Michelin and other national/global level accolades in mind, the people from those places aren't at all familiar the way we are with things like trout almondine or bbq shrimp.
If you have Instagram and can check out their page, you can see what I mean by presentation.

Wow. This was not our experience at all. We kept apologizing for not finishing the food.
We couldn't finish everything either. I actually ate way too much that night.

There is a big difference between a one star and a three star. I think there are a number of restaurants in New Orleans worthy of one star.
Maybe a handful of twos.
No threes by European standards.

Serious question - is Emeril's really that good? That much better than Commander's, August, Clancy's, the other nicer places in the city - food wise?
All this talk had me look at their menu and nothing really grabbed me like the nicer places usually do.
Went last year and had a phenomenal meal. We did manage to sit window-side, which I think really made the experience. Would suggest the main dining room with the Tasting Menu, not the lounge, for the full experience. It was probably better than several other Michelin star restaurants I've eaten at in other cities.
Overall, I agree. Emeril's is a lock for one star. Don't think anywhere Louisiana will achieve 2 stars.

I do not see a handful getting two, I'm not sure any. The only one that would have a prayer is Emeril's
And remember this new category is basically for most of the South. So places in Nashville, Memphis, Birmingham, Charleston, Asheville, Charlotte etc are going to be all a part of that category

Better is a matter of perspective.
They are doing the things that MICHELIN likes to give stars to.
That isn't necessarily "better" or "worse" than anyone else.

Same. We went in not even knowing this was an option, and it made the entire experience better.

how long is a michelin star good for? I thought Theodore Rex in Houston was rated but it doesn't have any stars.

1 year, or whatever length between publishing.
But no one makes you take down the plaque

Have you tried their new tasting menu? Safe to assume the recent timing along with this announcement isn't a coincidence.

Theodore Rex has a Bib Gourmand distinction and is in the guide. May have been what you saw.

Bib Gourmand will definitely go to places like Turkey and the Wolf
of course.

I feel they have been more lenient on the one stars recently

As much as I hate his politics, Mason really does a great job. That collard green melt sandwich is really freaking great.

No, Galatoire's isn't getting a Michelin Star. Very unlikely Commander's would either. (In response to the other thread)

In my opinion he has too many other places and interest now and Turkey has suffered. What they do have on the menu is still fine, but they used to always have a bunch of different sandwiches and some fun stuff. Now its pretty much always the same.

Why not?

Ate Commander's a few months back, food was average. I dig Herbsaint, food always consistent.

I cannot see Galatoire's as the type of place that gets stars.
Commander's MAYBE but it would be because of their high level of service and the place itself. I don't see CP as having star level food (well, the type of food that gets stars)

No chance they see any 3s, but I'd imagine they get a few 1s.
