I’m trying Mezcal for the first time and not sure I can tell the difference.

Any experts with insights?

Your Mezcal doesn't have a smoky taste?

Can you tell gin from vodka?

I think mezcal from tequila may actually be more distinctive.

I don't know what mezcal is but a friend once game me a bottle of tequila so smoky it tasted like a slim jim. In a good way, I drank all of it, but it was very smokey. Was that mezcal? This was probably 20 years ago.

most likely, but not all mezcals present assertive smokey flavors.

Tequila is a type of Mezcal made from blue agave. But mezcal can be made from several other agave varieties and thats what we gringos typically call mezcal. 90% of mezcal is made from espadin which absorbs more smoke, so you may have had a mezcal from the other 10%. Espadin Mezcal is considered the most basic type of mezcal with Tobala the most aromatic and flavorful but that can be debated. And some producers use less smoke than others.

I've had mezcals with no smoke but a lot of fruitiness. It depends on the region its from, the type of agave and how its produced. Some mezcal I've had has been way more complex than any bourbon I've had.

Zignum Reposado is more like a tequila than a traditional mezcal. It’s made in Tlacolula de Matamoros, Oaxaca at a large, modern production facility. It is not smoked.

Steamed, not roasted or smoked.

Only had the blanco and it most definitely reminded me of tequila.

I like the smokiness of mezcal’s but some of them have a band-aid aftertaste that I don’t like

Mezcal is definitely smokier than tequila. It’s easier to drink “neat” but not as versatile in cocktails. The smoke is usually strong in a good one.

Mezcal and tequila dont taste alike at all.

And like tejashorn said, i prefer straight mezcal. I got a mezcal margarita from juans, never again. just go tequila in the mixed drinks.

Then you should be drinking the cheapest swill you can get your hands on, because there's no reason for you to be spending this kind of dough when you can't tell the difference between anything.
