Go to a bar that specializes in cocktails.

If their menu has something with mezcal in it, order and you'll notice the difference. The drink name usually identifies as something relating to smoke.

I like a Oaxacan Old Fashioned. It's mezcal instead of whiskey (I can't stand whiskey) and I enjoy it thoroughly. Has enough smoke taste without feeling like I'm drinking a cigarette.

Then you should be drinking the cheapest swill you can get your hands on, because there's no reason for you to be spending this kind of dough when you can't tell the difference between anything.

Sigh.
Some of you people.

And like tejashorn said, i prefer straight mezcal. I got a mezcal margarita from juans, never again. just go tequila in the mixed drinks.

I’ve had some fantastic cocktails with mezcal. When done right, they are amazing.

They probably just poured in mezcal like they would tequila in a margarita.

Yes. To say Gin and vodka are more alike than tequila and mezcal is ridiculous.

It’s clear from this thread that mezcal is diverse and some of it is very much like tequila.
