NYC is a great gastrocentric location in the world but Louisiana/Cajun food has not been found in the city yet by me.

I remember Mara's Homemade being pretty terrible. Your best bet is to cook it at home.

With all the choices why would you be looking for it anyway? That's like looking for good pizza in Monroe.

I would have to agree with this. You are in one of the great food cities, why get a shitty jambalaya? If you have to eat food that reminds you of home, go to a souldfood place.

I remember some place on Spring Street owned by some Tulane grads that was decent. Can't remember the name.

I still find it curious that you can get a great rendition of any type of cuisine anywhere in the world, but you can only get great Louisiana food in Louisiana. It's an enigma.

I'm not exactly sure why this is, but it seems to me these places always want put more emphasis and effort on the schtick of being a Louisiana or "Cajun" restaurant, than they do on caring about the actual food being served.

That's sort of my theory on why such places are always so crappy, but it doesn't really explain why they all seem to insist on going that route.

I think part of it has to do with the small number of LA people. There are millions of chinese and vietnamese...thus increasing your odds of finding a good place in any town. For example, in the last 20-30 years note the influx of border jumpers...its no coincidence that better Mexican cuisine can be found across much more of the U.S.

Solo, you need to go to Restaurant Iris...Jesuit chef from NOLA that trained under Besh. If this place were in LA, it would be the best restaurant outside of NOLA bar none. In NOLA, it may even be in the top 10-12. Excellent.

Living here and I can tell you that there is no good Louisiana food to be had, no one does crawfish right, nothing. Luckily I have my pot and have at least one boil a season and cook better than anyplace in NYC that claims to have Louisiana food

i seem to find that regional american food outside of the original region generally sucks in comparison.....not just louisiana food.

eta:and maybe all cuisines are not very good compared to their native region or country....but we just judge louisiana cuisine more harshly bc of the expertise we have from being native to louisiana.

Hobo, I make it up to South Orange three or four times a year. Daughter and family live there. Always bringing seafood with us. How far away from South Orange do you live ?
