Parleaux for saisons, sours, pilsners, and lagers. Nobody else in the state is really doing these great styles well. Most aren’t even really trying.

Parish for hoppy beers.

Zony Mash is making great beer and the new space is nice. Not sure why the downvotes. They are making some amazing sours and IPAs such as Pillow talk

Cane River Brewing in Natchitoches is worth checking out these days. The original brewmaster from Great Raft is brewing for them now. Cool facility too that is in an old cotton gin.

Yes. They brought him in when their original brewmaster, Brooks, passed away. Harvey knows his shite for sure.

I don't know the guy, but we talked to him several weeks ago in Redbone Magic in Texarkana. He said he was splitting his time between there and Cane River Brewing.

If you like a brown ale, Cane River makes a nice one. They had a big foam problem, which I heard was from overfilling the cans, and it disappeared from stores (at least around here). I've not seen cans since, but they had it on tap in the brewery at our last visit.

They downvote my posts, I assume, because I don't typically care for beers that are super sour or bitter, and thus have tastes that are VERY out of sync with the rest of the board.

I downvoted you for your extremely broad brush. I prefer to be called a beer "geek," not a "snob." Lord knows I'm not above a cold Budweiser. I've gone so far down the beer rabbit hole that these days I just prefer a solid pale ale.

There was a time when Abita reigned supreme. They were a big fish in a little pond. Now they're a decent sized fish in the ocean. When the second craft beer wave got going, they focused more on scale than uniqueness. That's perfectly fine, and they're probably making money hand over fist. Amber, Turbodog, and Andygator are perfectly fine beers, and once or twice a year I crave one of those.

Most of the time when they step outside of their comfort zone, it's a miss. They particularly have trouble with more hop-forward beers. Most of that is probably due to their scale. They have a wider audience they cater to, so they can't be as bold as some of the smaller outfits in the state. It's a lot of money on the line to end up with a shelf turd. Just is what it is. I don't hate them.

I remember when getting a keg of Abita Amber or Purple Haze for the tailgate party was really getting fancy. And I used to take down some Turbodog and Andygator when I'd find it on tap. And Abita Strawberry used to sell out in days when it hit the shelves.

Then my tastes changed... and Abita hasn't. Not a knock on them really, as they are obviously still killing in nationwide, just not something I reach for anymore.

Were my generalizations that this board is far more interested in IPA's and sours than the general population not correct?

In Louisiana, definitely not. However, you venture to almost any other state and IPA's reign supreme. But, to your point, it does seem that about 90% of check-ins on untappd or in the FBD thread is some hazy IPA.

Personally, i still like hazy IPA's that are made well. There aren't many that are made well, IMO. But my i also like west coast IPA's, LOVE pilsners, saisons, mixed fermentation beers, English Bitters, Lambic/Gueuze, Trappist beers, etc... Actually, i find that the beer i purchase now are typically an "old world style" as opposed to NEIPA's or stouts. And i'm sure i'm an outlier from the typical beer nerd.

I think boo hit the nail on the head. Their beer is fine, for what they are, but i wouldn't call anything they make exciting anymore. When they venture out of their staples, it's usually not a good result. They rest on their laurels and that's fine.

I agree with your assessment of Abita. I grew up around people drinking Miller Lite so when I started drinking beer that's what I drank. Abita Purple Haze was the first beer where it seemed like hey maybe beer can taste good and made me want to try other craft beer.

Now it is very rare I buy Abita beer if I am buying beer for myself, but I still enjoy going to their brewery and it seems in the last year or so they have been experimenting with more sours and IPA's. They have made some really good stuff that is brewery only.

My vote for best brewery in LA is Gnarly Barley with Urban South close behind.

Tin roof has the best atmosphere, hot rn but sports wise maybe rally cap is better. Rally cap is bad for true sports pub feel.

Gnarley and urban are good too.

It's at calandros on gov. st., didn't buy it cause 2/3 of the beers they were selling were $18 for a 4 pack
