Looking to pick up a king cake from Dong Phoung on Friday. I've never been there. Would I have any trouble just walking in and getting one at the bakery or should I preorder?

Is it worth a 30 minute drive from Denham? Would Ambrosia Bakery be a better choice in Baton Rouge?

Yes I think it is. I'm sure Ambrosia is fine, but Navarre's is worth the extra drive. Trust me!

No. No king cake is worth leaving Denham for. Ever.

I would say yes. I pass through there every day for work, and never knew they had good king cakes until recently. They open at 8:00, and they're like all the other places, they have a long line that builds early. I would say you would need to get there early. I'm not sure if they have a line at 8:00, but between 9:00 and 10:00, they do. I know Jeanfreau's in chalmette has them, but they sell out early.

I was really impressed with their cake. It's not as traditional. It's softer, and the icing tastes mostly like a very whipped butter cream. A lot of the folks in the office who don't eat king cake said they loved it. My wife had a friend in Gautier tell her about them.

Heard today they haven't had any in several days because Dong Phong doesn't have any to give them.

I picked up a cake in the afternoon last year in the middle of carnival at DP’s. They bake them all day. So you don’t necessarily have to be first in line

THEy also apparently take orders as they handed cakes over to people that had called in

Has anyone tried a king cake from The Sweet Life in Lakeview? I saw it on Nola Eater’s top 20 king cakes of 2018 list. Worth bringing to our neighborhood’s king cake share get together?

Picked up a mini king cake from French Truck in BR this afternoon. Figured what the hell, $5 and the pastry chef for K Street grill makes them. Gotta be good right? Nah, too bready and dry. Ordered a plain cinnamon from Rosch Bakehaus for this week. Will post a review later. Anyone try the cuccidati or whatever the frick from District Donuts? Was tempted to try one this morning but the $28 price tag deterred me.

You should definitely pre-order because you're going to guarantee yourself a cake of your choosing(cinnamon, cream cheese, pecan, strawberry, or blueberry) without the wait. Long story short, each person got a raffle ticket and he called numbers in order, if he called your number and there were still cakes left, you could buy 2. We've ended up getting the last 4 of 6.

If you live around Jackson, I recommend Broad Street Bakery for their almond cream cheese cake.

I had Broad Streets traditional cake and it was so dry.

Just finished up a neighborhood king cake tasting. Represented were The Sweet Life plain, Party Palace, Nor-Joe’s Cannoli king cake, Nonna Randazzo, and a homemade.

None disappointed but the Nor-Joe’s Cannoli was a surprise hit. It had the traditional king cake dough but with cannoli filling. In addition to the traditional sugar icing, it was topped with half sliced almonds and half sprinkles. The adults loved it but I don’t think the kids cared too much for it.

ETA picture of the two side by side.

Also tried Whole Foods chantilly cream stuffed king cake and thought it was pretty good. Then, my mom shipped me a Rouses Pecan praline cream cheese king cake and damn it was awesome!

I tried to get a Manny Randazzo's but it's too late. I heard that Campbell's bakery has good cakes, gonna try them.

Never tasted Rouses, but it just doesn't look good to me. Looks overly bready and dislike the sugar crystals.

Had Haydels before, just never physically got one from the store, can you just walk in, or do you need to pre order one?
